So I've been learning guitar, and I've been pretty pleasantly surprised at my success.  Despite my initial insistence that I didn't really want to learn songs, I've decided I need to start learning some so I can learn some techniques.  Anyway, I found out where I've been screwing up.  I've been doing a good job of memorizing chords in terms of finger placement, but I realize that I only know the names of 3 or 4 of the 8 or so chords I know and there's no way I'll learn a song without knowing the names of the chords. I'm just posting this because I like to make sure everyone knows that I'm an idiot.

Just tune to Drop D and then one finger chord to your hearts content.

I learnt by TAB. i can read music as I also learnt Piano, but I never transferred that knowledge over to stringed instruments.

There are a lot of free guitar teaching videos on Youtube now that I never had then that break songs down. Cool that you are trying something new \m/

Big Gunz and Ammo Rackz.

My father is a very good guitarist. I tried learning when I was younger, but it didn't really interest me.

I want to play the accordion and the Finnish kantele.

I've been using youtube vids by Marty Schwartz, I think they are very good.  I've gone through his first 6 lessons or so and I feel like the next one or two will be to lean a song.  And if it's not I'm going to learn one anyway.  I think tonight I'm going to go back through from the beginning and learn all the names correctly.  I'm going to try, memorization has always been my achilles heel.

This is my third try to learn, but it's my most successful by far.

I learned when I was a teen ager. I would get tab books and books with chords. I didn't bother memorizing all the chords tho, just looked them up when needed. I mostly would learn songs until I was satisfied and would try something harder. Honestly, learning chords is fine but learning scales is just as helpfull. I suggest music theory for dummies. Since you are just starting, I would focus on learning riffs and what not to build up dexterity and comfort. As you get better you can try full songs or solos.

I didn't really shop around, I just looked up beginner guitar and picked the guy with the coolest hat.  That's how El Din taught me to choose quality.  But I'm pretty happy with Marty, I'm going to follow his beginner program to completion, and then see where I'm at, look around for the next thing.

Scales is what I want to learn next.  Well, my strumming is really really basic.  I dunno, I got a long way to go.  Honestly, right now my fingers are just starting to toughen up.  Strength hasn't been my problem, but it freaking hurts pushing on the strings.  My fingertips on the first three fingers of my left hand are basically numb now, I can play a lot longer now, but it still only takes 20-30 minutes of practice before I need a substantial break.  Once my wussy fingers get tougher it'll be easier to explore different stuff.

Strumming is what really gets me as well... Been learning Uke with my daughter (she is much better than me) and strumming patterns are the heart and soul of uke. Who would have guessed it would be so complex?

Marty hasn't got to strumming yet.  All he's taught me so far is chords...so I think it's coming.

I started following a tutorial series a month or 2 ago and my fingers hurt like hell but they got better. I think i was pushing down harder than i needed to on the strings

I've got short fat fingers.  The best place is right next to the fret, but on many chords I can't get my sausages all the way to the fret, so I end up pressing in the middle or even towards the back of the fret, which requires pressing hard if you don't want the note to sound buzzy.  Sometimes I'll pull my fingers back from a chord and the strings will have sunk so deep into my fingertips I'll pluck the strings just pulling them off.  But I'm either building calluses or killing nerve endings because they are feeling numb 24/7, and only hurt after playing for a little while, which I expect to go away if I keep at it the way I have been.

It’s all about the scales.  When you know scales cold, the rest falls into place.  They help with so many aspects of playing.

I had this logical plan, and instead I learned a new chord [F, I suck at it] and then attempted to learn a pink floyd song.  I am so not ready for that yet.  I think tonight I will attempt to learn the easiest song I can.
