In my opinion both guns are good, though I run the one with more DPM because most of the time you will not be needing the extra pen (because you should be fighting Meds and flanking heavies). I can not say anything about the grind though because I got it so long ago (my first tier 9)

I run the T-62A gun with more pen.
I like to peek a boom with this tank so the extra pen matters.
If you want to brawl, get the Obj 140 gun.

I run the D-10T2C because it gets all of the benifits (dpm, gun handling, and lighter) in exchange for 20mm of pen which only matters when you are fighting othe T-54s and tier 10 mediums which are already rare enough or penning certain weakspots frontally which in this case you should be shooting HEAT or trying to get out of the situation. Fair enough though, the D-54 leads to the T-62 which is more popular because of best in class gun handling, good pen and DPM, good gun depression and a turret thats on the stronger side of mediums. You do not have to worry about getting penned by tier 8 mediums, though the turret is quite weak against tier 10s.

My clan told me to reaearch the gun last and honestly, the stock gun while struggles in tier 10 shouldn't be that bad.

The grind sucks, yeah, but once you get top modules it's awesome

The grind teaches you to appreciate just how many tanks have workable gun depression.

edit: or at least it taught me. Not that I always remember.

I love that tank. If played right and angled right it acts like a mobile heavy in tier X. It can also bully a lot of tier 8s.

The best way to put it is it's like a mod 1 at tier 9 that is more agile.

Tunneling a player who is baiting shots and waiting for a pokey angling T54 upper front plate and turret to not be red is one of the harder lessons to learn at tier 8. And 9. And 10.

I was the low pen gun faithful until recently. The higher pen gun can help out lots in case enemy heavies follow the flank or you come against well protected meds.

20mm of pen can be the difference between penning and not penning the angled side of an E75. I prefer the D-54.

Probably a good idea to go for the gun first, 235 APCR pen on the stock gun is atrociously bad espeically with limited mobility.

Good luck on T-54 adventure.  It was my first tier 9. I struggled in it at first, and have since gotten it above 50%. But the lack of gun depression is my nemesis, especially when I  compare it to the Standard B and AMX 30 1er. I do so much better in those tanks.

No gun depression and this tank just sucks as a spotting med without it.

Get the motor first, then the gun that has a higher ROF.

it’s a fun tank. I miss Saturday morning toons with Lokeen running these tanks. Good fun when the motor and tracks are installed.
