One thing I have noticed lately in our playerbase, is how terrible most players hit rate is per battle. Big guns, little guns, it doesn't matter much. I commonly see players shooting 50% hit and pen rate, or even less. Even players with over 30,000 battles. This is a recipe for disaster, and surely sets you up to fail. I know at times this can be affected by a bad internet too. But take a look around after your battles. You will see on your team losses, players that shoot worse than Stevie Wonder. When you check your wins, you will see players that carried make every shot count, or at least make the most of their DPM as much as possible.

I think OP is referring to accuracy which all by itself can be very misleading.  Sure landing a higher % of shots is obviously better but if my survival rate is 25% and I'm regularly dying in the first 2 minutes, I'm not getting off many shots to begin with.  Or, I can be the guy I had on Port Bay yesterday...E75 shooting HE at everything.  Landed 5 out of 5 for a whopping 538 dmg.

Is hit rate or pen rate even tracked?   I don't seem to find this metric listed on Blitzstars.

Edit:  I should amend this to pen rate only.  I do see hit rate listed, but am more specifically looking for pen rate.

Hits Per Battle is Tracked 

Accuracy (hit rate) is tracked. 
Shot Efficiency is tracked 

Avg Damage is tracked 

 

Between those stats you can get a good idea how you are doing in specific tanks.

100% hit rate doesn't really matter if you are only getting off one round per battle.

To see Hit Rate in BlitzStars select a player profile and “Columns” in the Tanks section. You can add a Hit Rate column and customize that section.

False. if you're any good you should be blind firing constantly, which brings your hit rate down. my stats are purple and i have a relatively low hit rate of 72%.

Oh boy, if your really good you don’t have time for blind shots, by the time a shot is loaded your about ready to fire with effect. (That’s what I’ve seen on video anyway).

I'm confused. sometimes my hit rate is higher than shot efficiency and vice versa. I'm not sure what it all means.

Shot Efficiency is based on how much damage you do per game/hits compared to the top 100 players average. 
   It doesn’t correlate to hit rate - which is simply hits/shots.

so I have 100% shot efficiency, and on some tanks up to 200%. is that good? how can I know what the top 100 players average is? do they have like 500% or something?

Shot efficiency is largely irrelevant and has almost no correlation to winning. I'm not even sure why it's tracked to begin with. 
 

Shot accuracy is also somewhat irrelevant but it can be good at showing symptoms of bad play. If a player has bad damage and bad accuracy, then it means they aren't hitting what they aim at. If a player has good damage and bad accuracy (relatively), then it means they're likely doing a lot of blind firing.
 

The number one thing that influences winning and losing is damage. The more damage you do, the more likely you are to win. If you want to win more, that is the number one thing to improve. Case in point - show me a 60% career player that has less than 200 damage/tier and show me a 40% player that has more than 200 damage/tier. You won't be able to and that's bc damage = winning.

it’s a per shot thing. there’s no “good” or “bad”. if I’m putting out ten times as much damage on average as you firing twenty times as many shots per game but your shot efficiency is 200% of mine does it matter?
