It’s strange to me that you say facing TD in a LT or MT is un-fun.
I thought it would be the dream scenario.
I have has several situations where I had to face TD’s in a HT and I thought it was utterly dreadful.
I own a T8 Shark Heavy Tank and I thinking Facing T8 TD’s are completely unfair at times.
The TD’s have so much offense they can often penetration any object.
The HT’s are often very slow so they can’t dodge hits.
I have thought about going down the LT or MT line just to be able to deal with TD’s.
I think the Speed of the LT & some of the MT can allow them to beat TD’s in more of close combat fight.
If a TD hits a LT or MT, they will suffer damage.
If a TD hits a HT, they will suffer damage.
I don’t think any tank in the game is supposed to withstand a TD hit.
I think the TD’s have been designed to go thru anything.
I am still fairly new to the game, but I have made the following observations.
LT - Scout, Crazy Fast, & Chip Damage
MT - Mixture - Scouting, Crazy Fast, & Heavy Damage (Can Out Flank Slow Enemy Tanks with Higher Power Guns)
HT - Strong Defense - Can Withstand almost all damage from LT & MT, but not TD’s - Lower Offense
TD - Strong Offense - Can Penetrate almost all units - Lower Defense

The fact that you keep getting penned by TDs in a T54E2 says a lot about you

Go hull down

I don’t see how going Hull Down helps?
Doesn’t a Tank Destroyer have enough Penetration to shot thru my Sharks Strongest Armor which would be my Sharks Frontal Turrent Armor?
My Sharks Frontal Turrent Armor is 240
A Tier 8 TD such as the T28 Prototype has 306 Penetration.
Whether my Shark is Hull Down or not any direct hit by the TD will deal damage, The TD’s have the Gun Power to go thru my Tanks defenses.
Maybe, your advice would work better if I had a different tank which had more Turrent Armor

The Shark has angled turret armor, meaning that its effective armor - the armor after taking into account angles - can reach 300 to 400. The shark is really strong.

Are you saying that I need to have my Tank on an angle while being Hull Down to benefit from the Angled Turrent Armor effective armor?

the armour numbers themselves don't mean much, every part of he tank has its own armour value then that is multiplied by the angle the hit came in on to give the effective armour the penetration has to overcome. Here's the sharks one: https://blitzhangar....or-performance
The entire turret is basically all over 250mm effective armour and up to 600mm, Tier 8 TDs are very unlikely to get through that or the upper plate so if thats all you show while hiding the lower hull you probably wont get penned.
You shouldn't jump straight to tier 8 you just need to pick up knowledge, you don't really know wot properly until you've had at least 5-10 thousand battles. Just play each tier until you feel comfortable there then go to the next
