I just think that the front should at at least have a bit more armor to make it more difficult for 200+ gun we are talking t8 guns that can pen straight though the front of the pike nose

No, its not like that. On paper, it seemed adequate, or even more. But, it wasn't the type of feature the tank supposed to have in my opinion.

The problem is the one thing it needs is great front hull armor to be workable as it stands the 120 mm frontal armor for the pike isn't enough that's a big problem when you label it a heavy when it isn't have the heavy armor to be it at least frontal or maybe the sides also.

I think it helps to look at this thing the same way you looked at the t-28 and kv1s. They've got good guns and better mobility, but at the price of weaker hull armor. The is8 top gun is very good, the is7 gun used to be a downgrade in terms of shot effectiveness (till some buffs came around )

I think it needed them the pike nose regardless is a troll armor by itself it will block a lot of shots by itself in one match and maybe the next one near zero are blocked. That's how is3 does and that's expecting tier 8 guns or any high pen gun for that matter.

I just started grinding it, but I am already getting a feeling that it is a heavy medium with a big shift into a medium (heaving no armour that is). Mobility wise it seems more agile that ST-1 even though I am still using stock tracks/engine and 75% crew. But I don't think it will even be anywhere close to ST-1 in brawling. I don't expect I can stand against E75 in that tank, while I can easily do that in ST-1. I hope I can zip around and do the second like support with its great gun. It is ironic that at tier 7, German heavies (especially Tiger 1) are to be more of the second like support, while KV-3 and IS can do the front line heavy brawling. and at Tier 9 there is some reverse in those roles (i.e. IS-8 vs E75).

It is of course just IMHO...

HMM I'll reserve judgement once I get everything right now it's a bit struggle for me to get use to this tank. I think the lower plate should be at least be angled more to make it less likely that tier 7 can hurt you or at least make the lower plate more smaller so that it becomes less of a target. Another one also at least have the pike nose be angled a lot more to make it less weak than it is or put in a few mm as in 5-12mm or something like that on the pike nose. Right now I get a few lucky bounces sometimes but it does need a bit more armor to be able to do well frontal is the major problem on the tank since it's heavy with not much better armor than is3, it's a little struggle using that bl9 with having a bigger weak spot than the is3, but I'll get the mt62 first to see if the tank really changes at that point. Poll is showing that it's a good tank. I'll see if it is a good one. I'll get everything modules and then play around it to change play style maybe to see it works better after that with 100% crew.

you keep saying this but it's not that simple. The armor is sloped and so if the is8 faces straight on the upper glacis has over 200 mm effective armor. Even the lower glacis straight on has 180 mm effective armor, but the lower glacis is a weak spot on many a tank.  Look at the tank in the armor inspector app and it will give you an idea of how to best utilize it's armor.

After the full upgrade, I feel a bit better about this tank. It is fast and nimble. Same gun as ST-1 but a better RoF. The main thing that the armour doesn't help against any tier 9-10. I don't think I ever bounced a shot lol. IS-3 bounces very well against its own tier. IS-8 - not so much. I'm afraid for me it will be one of those tanks with an outrageously low survival rate (e.g. Pz IV).. But it is fun to drive around on it no questions about that.

Peek-a-boom, rolling with the mediums and 2nd line DPM with big gun is where this tank shines, it can also side scrape in a pinch

The versatility of this tank makes me like it more than the E 75, perhaps since it's so underestimated you can get away with a bit more since you get less attention then some other tanks

I love the IS-8 sometimes even more than my IS7

It's a great tank once fully upgraded. You can do some rest things flanking with it.  The only thing I wish it had was a few more degrees of gun depression. I also end most game in it with only 100 hp or so left.
