The T-54 Tier IX Russian medium tank is a very versatile and agile medium tank with great armor but not so good gun depression. It also has a choice of two Tier IX guns (after the turret) that you can choose to unlock, both being the same research cost which is 59,300xp. Since each has ups and downs I felt like making a thread so people don't have to wonder which to unlock first.

The first gun, the one leading directly to the T-62A would seem like the best option since you don't have to unlock the second that leads to nothing, for now that is. I'm going to post both of their statical numbers and go over the ups and downs of both.

100mm D-54:

Rate of Fire: 8.27

Average Penetration:

AP: 219mm

HEAT: 330mm

HE: 50mm

Average Damage:

AP & HEAT: 300

HE (when penetrating): 420

Dispersion at 100 meters: 0.39

Aim Time: 2.9 seconds

100mm D-T102C

Rate of Fire: 8.27

Average Penetration:

AP: 201mm

HEAT: 330mm

HE: 50mm

Average Damage is the same as the D-54.

Dispersion: 0.35

Aim Time: 2.3 seconds

In my opinion, the D-54 is better for WoTB. The ranges I usually play at, which is usually circling a tank and placing multiple rounds at close range in to the sides and back. The extra pen helps immensely against bigger targets like Tier IX and X heavies and TDs. But if you're for more accuracy and a slightly better RoF then the D-10T the gun you want to unlock first, despite it being the one not currently leading to anything. I unlocked the D-10T first because I thought I'd like it better with the accuracy but once I unlocked the D-54 and tried it in a few games, I fell in love. Or you could be annoying and just spam gold with the D-10T and not care because you pen almost every time anyways.

D-54 being the better close-range gun but the D-10T being the faster and more accurate one, which one did you/will you choose?

Tier Xs (in order of unlocking): T110E5, M48 Patton, T-62A, IS-7, E50M, IS-4, FV4202, T110E3, FV215b, Obj. 268, T110E4, Leopard 1, Obj. 140, STB-1, Obj. 263, T57 Heavy, AMX 50B, Bat Chat 25t

Most played tank: T-62A (3,100 battles)

D-10t cause with better aim time you get more flexibility and are increasing your Dom by reducing the amount of time it takes to aim and plus 2.9 second aiming time is atrocious almost Chinese. The pen difference is negilable while .6 aiming time difference is not.

EDIT: perhaps that optional gun will lead to the obj.140 which IMO is better than the 62a

Upon reading this I decided to change my decision and go with the D-54.  I was originally leaning towards the D-10T but thinking about what you said and the way the tank should be played it makes sense to get the higher pen so when you are circling and find you have shots at the front of a tank while their turret is backwards you will have the better chance of doing damage.  There is always HEAT for those tanks you can't pen.

At a later point I my free experience the D10T to try it but I don't know if I'm going to want to spend the extra 60K experience on that instead of the T-62A.

HEAT ammo is great. And you can't reliably pen another T-54 even with 18~ extra pen. Load them HEAT and make em rage.

Once you recognize the necessity of using HEAT in most matches, the D-T102C becomes the obvious choice.

Actually I usually make money or break even even when spamming gold on the tanks mentioned. I'm constantly switching ammo depending on my targets and it's worked out fine with no negative credits for the most part. So I'm curious JACK which did u end up using and have you tried both

I'm not there yet - but my initial thought is the D-T102C because of the aim time. This is likely because I haven't played it with the first gun yet - maybe the aiming circle with equipment and consumables is such that you don't have to worry so much about the aim time?

Concep, when circling and close range do you find the aiming circle is small enough that the aim time isn't an issue? Possibly because you are on the move so much, the aim time is not as relevant anyway?

I play with only the E(fail typo) D-T102C. All my results have been okay-very good.

Any gun can work, but with low alpha, you want every shot to not miss.

Excellent guide Concep.  I now have the T-54 and in the back of my mind I was wondering if I was missing something by going with the D-T102C.

Interesting. The PC forums usually point to the DT102 as the gun to get for the T-54.

I sometimes drive Warships too.
