There have been numerous posts asking about creating a clan, as well as numerous attempted clans that have failed due to a variety of reasons.

My credentials in starting a successful clan can be found here.

Here is my advice to you if you are looking to create your own clan.

Make sure you have a large amount of battles played before creating the clan.

You want to be someone that at least seems experienced at first glance.  Nobody wants to be led by a leader with less than one or two thousand battles played.

Have some members that have agreed to join your clan before making the official announcement.

Having members on your roster when you start off makes you seem like you are mean business.  Remember to not reveal who you have asked to join though, showing your failures is never a good business strategy.  I would recommend at least 10 members to start off with.

Have clan rules and explain your clan structure.  A brief introduction helps too.

Nobody wants to join a clan where nothing is laid out, and the only thing that is certain is the clan name and whether they are in or not.

USE PROPER GRAMMAR.

Not using proper grammar makes you seem young, immature, and unfit to lead a clan.

Try to arrange a teamspeak server that is either private, or shared with another clan.

Voice communication is something many look for now, and teamspeak is the generally accepted one for gaming.  Not kik, or Skype, or other social voice chat applications.

Try to develop a presence and positive reputation in the community before creating the clan.

When the first post you make is the one announcing your clan's existence, people tend to take you a bit less seriously.  If say Fog_Cruiser_Australia were to create his own clan, I would put my money on his clan doing better than that of a well structured one led by someone that almost no one in the community knows.

Stay Active

Keep up to date on the forums and make posts on the clan thread as well as other parts of the forums.  Even if you are active, just not making posts, how do others know that your clan is still there?

Try to establish some relations with successful clans.

The best indication of a clan's success is the acknowledgement of the larger clans.  Get friendly with their members and establish a presence.

Try joining a clan before starting one yourself.

Leading a clan in any capacity can be a large amount of work.  You should try joining a clan in a leadership position so that you can get a taste of what it is like to lead.

Keep your members engaged and active.

If your members are inactive, then your clan will not seem successful in the eyes of others.  High participation is one of the key traits to a successful clan.

These are my points that I feel should be satisfied in order to create a successful clan.  I hope that everyone finds this helpful!

If anyone thinks of other key points to establishing a clan, do let me know and I will update this guide.

Mono this is a great guide and further exemplifies what a stand up tanker you are! Hopefully this can be pinned in the appropriate sub in the clan section so any future players with stars in their eyes and posters of Rommel on their walls can read first. . .

What about a clan website? Well defined sign up process?

Suppose my opinion is null and void since I don't really see the point of clans in the first place.

I would add that people need to know what they are getting into. From my experience as a member, you'll have to be good at:

Organizing events

Resolving conflicts

Saying "no"

Being patient

Being fair

Responding quickly

Herding cats

I strip away the old debris that hides a shining car, a brilliant red barchetta from a better vanished time

Dont let other clans poach your good players and  actively recruit. You will have members come and go, try to maintain a group of loyal players. Dont try to please everyone, its just not going to happen. As a commander, one should have zero tolerance for insubordination. Do not be afraid of public opinion which seems to be a very real factor in this community. Make the decisions YOU feel are right for your guys, the popular opinion is not necessarily the correct one. If you have a clan member getting out of line or has a problem with perhaps a member of another clan, handle it in a swift and decisive manner. The other clan will appreciate it and return the favor in the chance the shoe is on the other foot one day.

U need To know that Monopower is a 3 year old prodigy child with an IQ of 300 that speaks 9 languages including Chinese in Cantonese and mandarin and 17 dialects from Africa and South America. He also plays all chord instruments and the accordion. He is an excellent culinary connoseuir and well traveled UN adviser in clan and tribe relations.

Great write up Mono. AND it's all from experience. I remember when we was just a a good toon mate blowing up tanks and now he runs a great clan of top notch tankers.

Great guide Mono. I guess I would say that before someone decides to create a clan, they should spend some time in one first. Learn the in's and out's of what is involved. If you work your way to an officer's role, you really see just how much is involved in running and growing a quality clan. You will learn what works well as well as seeing what doesn't work and can be improved on. Make sure you surround yourself with quality people. I'm not talking stats but a good sounding board goes a long way with ideas and problems.

"It's a fool that goes into battle and doesn't use every tool at his disposal. If you ever catch yourself in a "fair" fight, you deserve to lose."-- Meta
