Hi all. It's me again. I had asked a question regarding choice of gun for the KV-1S. It became obvious that there really was no choice. The 122mm, even with its long reload, was the clear winner.

I now have a KV-3 and am once again pondering gun choice. I'll be honest by saying I think I've made my choice, but I like hearing from the more experienced tankers.

I like the 100mm over the 122mm (the better one) because, if my math is correct, the DPM is theoretically better. It causes less alpha per shot, but the rounds per minute (reload rate) is much better. The penetration is the same- the 100mm is actually better with apcr.

I've bee experimenting with both, but even against tier eights and nines, the 100mm does enough damage to cause more than just a stir.  Thoughts?

I run the 122 mainly because you see tier 9 and if you're sidescraping or peek-a-booming the slight different in reload isn't as important as getting as much damage as you can.

Thanks for asking the question. I've been grinding the KV-3 for a while now. I already had the 100mm unlocked from the medium line, and mounted it as soon as I researched the turret. It's a much better gun than the 107mm, IMHO. I'm 1k xp away from the first 122, and to be honest, that 3.53 rpm scares me at tier 7, because of the level of noobery. The high rate of fire offers more flexibility dealing with mediums, etc. I will mount the 122 when I get to it and give it a try, but I'm thinking I'll go back to the 100 until I unlock the second 122 (4 rpm) .

I'm no stranger to high alpha/slow reload, as I do quite well in the E-100, but I'm not sure the play style suits a tier 7. Also, at 45 games in, my KV-3 is at a staggering(for me) 68% WR, so the 100mm is obviously working just fine. :)

my semi-educated 2¢.

Thanks guys. I see good points with both guns. It's almost a matter of what situation you're dealing with. For me personally, it seems like i've had more success with the 100mm so far, but i'm not giving up on the 122.

I'm really liking the 100mm. I just played at Black Goldville with 5 tier 9's per side. I realized right away that put me in a support role and I was able to offer my team 1462 damage in the win. I know that's not stellar, but I didn't have any harsh words aimed at me either. Lol. I knew my role (something I've been working on) and used my quicker loading 100mm to fill in when the big boys were reloading their Deathstar guns.

The nerfing of the second 122 on 1.11 was criminal. Ruined a fabulous tank.

Ah, thanks for bringing this up. I rebought the KV-3 just before the announced nerf and was kind of bummed. Now I think I'll try to 100mm and see what it's all about.

So, mounted and played the 122 in both solo and toon matches on Saturday and part of Sunday. I can live with reload, but aim time is entirely too long for tier 7. Lots of misses or just missed opportunities. My WR slipped. Remounted the 100mm last night and my WR resumed it's climb. The 100mm is the way to go. The reliability more than makes up for the entirely theoretical DPM of the 122. I'd rather pen for 270ish dmg than whiff for a theoretical 350 dmg. Sad, because IMHO the top gun should be the best, but it just isn't. WG has some splainin to do.

I agree. You expect the reload time, but the aim time is the deal breaker for me. I feel much more effective with the 100mm. I peak out with the 122mm and the aiming circle is all over the place, even with the gun laying drive. With the 100mm, I can pick my shot and duck back behind cover.

Again, my ideology is to not go head to head with a tier 9 anyway. i just try to offer support to the big boys on my team. Imo, the 100mm does just fine in that regard.

Give it a shot. The 100mm isn't exactly a pea shooter. It lacks some of the alpha of the 122, but it penetrates just fine, even the tier 9's.

I finished that line months ago but kept the KV-3 for fun and profit. I always ran with the big gun and had about an 80% win rate with it. I've played it a few times since the nerf and I have to think the smaller gun may be the way to go now. It's a shame really and I feel bad for those that never got to use it pre-nerf.

I played it pre nerf, but didn't have the xp for the 122. I don't notice a difference post NERF because I am still using the 100mm. I looked at the nerf notes, and it does not mention an aim time nerf. How is the 122 different now than it was, as far as play goes?

Reload speed and dispersion were nerfed and those were poor to begin with. To me it was enough to be noticeable and it definitely did not seem as OP as before. I understand it needed to be balanced but it's still a bummer, lol.

But on a positive note, the nerf to the T29 caused me to sell it (I wasn't playing it much anyway and I have finished the line) and I used the proceeds to help get the KV-13 and the Comet. So now I can run around in my mediums slaughtering the nerfed tier 7s!

I played my KV-3 after nerf, and IMO I didn't feel a big difference. Feels the same OP as before.

On the other note, I never played it with 100 mm :)

Yeah, I am just not effective with that big gun. It was giving me fits. They would peek a boom before I could get the reticle even close to a usable size. Lots of missed shots left me fuming. I could see how it might work in a brawl, but I tend to play a little further back, hull down, etc. honestly, I don't play it much differently than the T29, which I bought back just before the nerf. The mobility nerf on the 29 is very noticable, now the two tanks feel very similar to me. Except the kv-3 might get a few more bounces out in the open, but only maybe. That lower plate is butter.
