The JagdPanzer IV, the tank destroyer that many people strongly dislike in the line of German TDs. I found it to be weak too, but I have finally made it to the JagdPanther.

[My Credentials]: Of the 91 battles I played, I have won 52 games(62%), faced 4 draws, and lost 30 times(32%). Of those games, I survived a meager 45 games(49%). I have a Mastery Badge with 1095exp. I averaged 541xp per game, 1301 damage, and achieved a destruction ratio of 1.6 and spotting ratio of 1.3.

Summary: The JagdPanzer IV is a fairly weak tier 6 tank destroyer of the German line. The low health pool of 740 will not allow you to take many hits, and the weak hull armor of 80/40/20 does not compensate for the lack of hit points. The frontal armor is angled back, and the gun mantlet will troll bounce some shells, but the protruding part underneath just covers the transmission. As you may know, German tanks are tinderboxes when it comes to frontal engine damage and fires. However, the engine that carries over from the Pz. III A. and StuG III Ausf. G does provide a healthy 440hp, and the track traverse of 35 degrees is not too shabby, although it is much slower when compared to its parent, the StuG. The L/70 and 10,5 cm derp carry over. The top 88mm L/56 is a very controversial gun. I have never used the short 88, so I will only say that the penetration is not enough, and that the L/70 is far superior.

Research Path(s): *=modules that can already be researched through previous tanks/other lines.

Equip Maybach HL 120 TRM*(Pz. III A & StuG III) -> Equip either 7,6 cm Pak 42 L/70*(StuG III) or 10,5 cm StuH 42 L/28*(StuG III) -> Suspension -> 8,8 cm Pak L/56 -> JagdPanther

Why:

Engines:

Maybach HL 108 TR: 320 hp 450kg

Maybach HL 120 TR: 350 hp 510kg

Maybach HL 120 TRM: 440hp 510 kg

The upgraded engine is well worth it for such a light tank destroyer. If you do not already have it, I am forbidden to talk to you.

Guns:

7,5 cm Pak 39 L/48: Stock gun. Never use this gun. If I see anyone with it, feel free to call me an [edited], but you are a noob.

10,5 cm StuH 42 L/28: The derp gun. Can be effective??? (as long as you spam HEAT)

7,5 cm Pak 42 L/70: The golden gun. The best penetration(150/194/38), Rof(10.52), and accuracy(0.33). I used it for the whole grind.

8,8 cm Pak L/56: The last gun. Not the 'best' gun. It has a decent RoF(8.61) with increased alpha(220/220/270) and okay accuracy(0.35) at the cost of penetration(132/171/44).

Suspensions:

Jagdpanzer IV 0-Serie: The stock one.

Jagdpanzer IV: Upgraded suspension with a decent 35 deg/s traverse speed.

Get the last one. 35 deg/s isn't comparable to the StuG, but it's plenty to ensure you do not get circled.

Consumables:

My loadout:

Multi-Restoration Pack

Repair Kit

First Aid Kit

OR

Chocolate/Adrenaline

Ammunition:

Mine: (L/70)

45/15/2

OR

(if you are cheaper)

55/5/2

Equipment:

If you plan on keeping the tank.

Gun Rammer

Camo Net/Binocs

Vents

Gameplay:

As any TD driver, a Jagdpanzer IV driver needs to find the balance between sniping and directly supporting the team. It is a very hard tank to master with its lackluster armor and small gun arc. The only real way to round corners is to sidescrape. It is easier to do when the gun is locked in place. Unless you equip the 10,5 cm or 8,8 cm, the alpha damage is pretty low. For this low firepower and minimal survivability, it isn't unusual to struggle in this tank. Try to maximize the RoF and German accuracy, and get to the JPanther as soon as possible! (It gets better)

I've never taken much interest into the German TDs, both lines, but if I decide to grind through it, this should help. Nice review. +1

This is the most important information about the JagdPanzer.  I was using the 8.8 cm for most of my grind and absolutely hated the tank.  Toward the end, I switched to the 7.5 cm to try something different and resulted in good gains in both wins and damage done.  The extra penetration and faster shots more than compensates for the lower damage.  The tank gets noticeably more agile too.

EDIT: Quote too long

Another nice guide! I have to admit, this is my first time seeing a game with only Mastery and no other awards in Blitz.

Personally, I like the 88mm because I like the high(er) alpha.

I had to get 1300 experience for my mastery :-/

edit: oops that was StuG. 1080 was jagdpanzer. Well, nice guide; however, I only kept three premium shells loaded and ten high explosive. The only tanks I ever needed premium on was is3. I didn't play the tank very properly though. I was still in withdrawals from brawling with my hetzer.

Great guide!

I honestly don't understand why people hate on the jpanzer so much. I think it's a fantastic TD in a lot of respects. Great speed, amazing camo, incredible ROF, and decent pen capability when aiming in the right area with the right gun. The derp gun is fun but to expensive to play unless you just want to have fun and don't need to save for anything. Sure the armor is pretty weak, you can't really go head to head with just about anything, but I've found it to be a pretty easy "grind".  No doubt the jpanther is a huge step up though. Then again, I loved my stug and many hate it.

@ilyathegreat01

Some people are TD drivers.

Some are not.

In general, the Jagdpanzer doesn't provide the firepower many expect at tier 6.

I agree, although I wouldn't call myself a TD drive exactly. Trust me, there are times are get way too impatient and start brawling...as you can imagine that means I die more often than not. The other problem I've noticed is that TD's depend very much on their teams, you just can't really carry a game in a TD in the same way, so if the team sucks you're screwed.

By the way, I miss my jpanzer "grind"! I'm on the jpanther now and I haven't figured it out yet, I currently have a 25% win rate and have died in almost every game. :(

I suck in TDs too. Don't have one anymore. Too hard to consistently do well. Frustrating.

Man I love this tank if I'm against equal or lower tiers but it's sucks when there are tier 8 tanks on the field

Just got it today. Still at 55% crew but with best engine and tracks already.

I tag along behind the mediums and heavies. I once face hugged with an SU-100y. We were both one shot away from death. Luckily a med from my team finished him off from the side.

On Mines this morning I attempted to snipe from between the two small houses when an M4 came along. He blocked my shot and hassled me until eventually I figured out that he was herding me back up to the crane where the rest of the team was. Weird but effective :) We also had a Tier 2 on the red team so I guess MM screwed up big time there.

Do not be discouraged by the lackluster performances of the German TDs in the mid tiers. It gets infinitely better once you fully upgrade your Ferdinand down the line. Even your brawling fantasies will be satisfied.

There was one Ferdinand driver who said "protect me" when the game started. 4 of us followed him up the rocks while the rest flanked. The flankers died but we won the game. Don't want to be on the team facing that Ferdinand.

Thanks so much for this guide. I initially started up the German TDs, and loved them. Tier2-4 went very well. StugIII tons of fun but my win rate went closer to 50%. Then the JgPzIV and my win rate is about 35% I don't know how i've kept going this far (near to Tier7 in exp). Fortunately I had a beautiful game and got Ace Tanker or I'd have dumped the tank for my American Med and Heavies. I've always thought I should be able to do much better, I think I've only been running with the 8.8 gun, so I'l take your advice and try and trade. Also I'm glad to hear that it gets better.

Trying the derp gun now. Pro: more damage per shot. Con: reload takes ages. Have to change my style. Still at 68% crew though. More grinding needed.

Got some high praise from an enemy IS-152 driver today: "I hate that JP" :playing:

I kept him and two other tanks (KV and one other) from climbing up the hill on Copperfield from my position behind the conveyor. No kills but I damaged them enough for the T29 and T20 hiding under the crane to swoop in at the right time and kill all three. Some of their shots bounced so maybe I was just lucky he didn't have the BL-10 yet :coin:
