I play it like I play some tds, a supporter to more heavily armoured tanks. Despite it's high speed for a heavy, I find it struggles to keep up with most mediums.

Use and abuse the gun and turret, which are really the only things it has going for it in my opinion. The mobility might be good, but it's a little overrated, and your not taking positions as quickly as mediums will. The ufp is pretty good, but keep an eye on the MASSIVE lower plate and you'll be fine.

The IS-8 is one of my favorite Tier 9 tanks. A true Heavyum!

 

Pros: Mobility, Great gun, Fast Reload, Great Alpha, Works well with mediums, Peek A Boom's well, Hull down Monster.

 

Cons: Nothing like the IS-3(You will need to change your playstyle), Soft hull, A few weak spots on the turret but wiggling can mitigate taking damage.

 

Equipment: Rammer, EGLD or Vents, Vert Stab

 

Consumables: I use Multi, Repair and adrenaline but that is preference for most of my tanks.

 

This tank is really great at bringing the pain to the enemy as long as you can stay second line or hull down. While there are a few weak spots next to the gun mantlet and the top of the turret they are small and wiggling makes them hard to hit. Peek a boom as much as possible in this tank as well. The whole key to playing the IS-8 well is to lay down good alpha without taking it in return. Fire on distracted reds. Almost anything and everything WILL pen your hull. Use that good alpha and fast reload to dish out the damage. Avoid brawling if possible.

 

Another good use of this tank its to use its incredible mobility. Toon with a medium and wolfpack with them. While the gun is not as fast as a medium gun, for the alpha it dishes out; it is pretty fast. Combine with adrenaline to make a good wolfpack better! 

 

That is about all I can think of at the moment. Keep your gun in the game... Peek A Boom... Use your speed... Do not expose hull unless you have too.

Be patient. Don't get baited onto trading shots. Keep that big gun in the game. If you get a flank it's lots of fun dishing out that much alpha

Almost 200 battles in....47WR, 28 Survival.... 1608 Avg Damage...I like it.  I've had some good games, but I played the ST-I much much better.

Keep this tank alive. IS-8 is not a front line heavy. It can not take damage up front. Ideally it will be hidden behind walls, hills or behind other, stronger tanks, and just doing damage. 

You have a great gun with great pen and alpha, keep that gun in the game as long as possible! 

Or follow the mediums! You can be behind them providing fire support so that they don't get overwhelmed.
