Thanks for stopping by.  I started playing WOTB about 18 months ago.  I'm 40 and haven't seriously played any video games in a long time. Like many, I started off as a NOOB!  I thought the idea was to do as much damage as possible, as fast as possible, so I would always lead and get killed in a matter of minutes.  Having never played a WOT game on any platform I had no basis for how to play.

Sometime around the time that clans actually launched, I started to pay attention.  I remember reading Alexbuildit's requirement for the 501st and then I looked at my stats and said I wanted to get better. I now understood that clans with good players cared about WR, Hit Rate, DMG Ratios, etc.  I started watching videos, I learned to hull down and peek a boom a bit better (I still struggle with side-scraping, the idea of taking shots scares me).  I dedicated myself to getting good enough to make it into a clan (my goal was a 57% WR).

My problem was that despite my level of poor play at the beginning, I played a lot of matches.  That would mean that I would have to play really well for a long time to dig myself out.  I'm pleased to announce that today I have hit a 55% WR (I'm afraid to hit battle again).  That's probably not great to most of you, but given I've played over 24k battles, it's been hard. My 30 and 60 WRs are 62.87% and 60.83%.

My goal remains to get to 57%, and I recognize that if I keep running ~60% WR, that's going to take me another 18 months, but I'm going to get there.  While I am trying to accomplish that goal I have a few other intermediate goals for myself:

  • I am training my skills like crazy.  I pick whatever tank type has the highest % complete on the next level of skills and abuse the 2x multiplier as much as I can playing almost exclusively that tank type until I have trained I skill, then I move to the next.  As a result I have only 1 medium and light tank skill left, and 2 TD and Heavy skills left.
  • I have researched every tier X tank, but still need to grind credits for the STB1, JgPz E100, and Maus. (I still have to go back and research the JPanther II...thanks WG for adding a tank that I had already sold the predecessor of).
  • My final goal once I am done with skills is mastering the mastery!  As it stands I have 61 ( somehow I got lucky and did my 183 and Leo 1 a long time ago...I struggle in both!).
  • Hopefully along the way I'll see some light purple...but I'll take that as a buy product of pursuing my other goals.

Anyway, thank you to WG for such a great game...yes there are things I would change, but overall, I love this game.  Thanks to the few people I have platooned with along the way, I've learned a few things from those I've been lucky enough to toon with.  Thanks to 501DV and the whole 501 family.  When you accepted me into the clan I believe I was around a 52% WR, thanks for giving me a chance, wanting to represent has helped me be a better player.  Finally, thanks to the full community.  It's been great playing with all of you and I look forward to more fun!

Congrats man!

WG has hit a gold mine with this game.  I'm pretty much the same profile as you - 40s, not a gamer, no time for it, then Blitz comes along and it's like we're all snorting blow.  The connection to real-life vehicles that have historical significance is the reason for me - as it was likely for you.

And like you, I am still learning, though largely from my kids who are purple!  Blue first, purple someday I guess...

Tanks:  _X: T110E5, T110E3, FV215b(183), IS-7, Obj.140  _IX: M103, T-54  _VIII: IS-6, T34, Lowe, T-44, IS-6, IS-3D  _VII: T-43, Comet, E25, AT-15A, SU-122-44

It's a long grind. Our stories are similar and we're the same age. Hard to compete with some of these whipper snappers out there but us 'old guys' manage I guess. Lol.

Look at your 30/90 win rate on the stats site and try to keep that up. Your career WR will tick up slowly. ;)

That's too funny. My kids are only 4 and 6, so the best I get is my daughter (6) will look at the screen and tally how many we've killed versus red and then point out where reds are on my screen.  Probably not the best parenting, but oh well.

There's an upside....somehow I have no problem buying a premium tank or two when I feel like it!

Congrats on your milestone.  It sets an excellent example of what can be done, even with high battle count.  We're proud you're part of [501DV].

I'm slowly sneaking up behind you - just hit 54% yesterday...

You can make that font as small as you want...I checked yesterday to see where I stood in the clan...I know you're catching up.  But you've got a lot of administrative duties to deal with too, so I know it'll take you a while.  :)

Congrats and many of us have the same story. Starting out not knowing where to go and what to do.  Then finding the WOTBLITZ forum, getting educated, watching some videos, and then having that translate into winning more...which is way more fun!  This is a game that the older guys can play and compete with the younger players.

Cheers and and keep on working the winrate upwards:)

+1. Yep, same thing. I am 46, never been a huge gamer(well, maybe donkey kong back in the '80s!), but got hooked on this with my kids who are waaaaay better than me.  44wr at 3k, then decided to actually learn and take the time to become better. Platooned with some great players and have learned alot. Crossed 50wr recently and at 7k battles.  55 is my next goal.  It is becoming harder since i primarily play on the weekends with my sons and each win hardly moves the wr 'needle'.  Congratulations on your goal making!

While driving you become hyper alert to surroundings identifying escape routes, and good defensive positions, and realize crap I'm in my car not a tank.

There's one other thing I'll say about my progress thus far.  I've done it with very little tooning.  That's not to say there is anything wrong with tooning, I just felt like too much of a noob to toon with others (yes, that's probably why I don't do as many countdowns).  I think I really want to accelerate this process then I will need to make tooning a bigger part of my practice.  As it stands today, less than 2% of my wins are from toons, I hope to boost that number closer to 20% and hopefully my WR will go up accordingly!

Congrats! Your journey sounds a lot like mine - but I haven't got in nearly as many battles! (Little older than you as well - lol). I recently got wn7/8 blue and am struggling to pull up the Star1. Striving for 57% and enjoying this game as much as I can. Hope to see you on the battlefield in future.
