Shells

Ever wondered what ammunition you should use, or why you didn't penetrate? This all about shells.

(Note: Didn't understand a term or word? Go to the glossary at the bottom of the page!)

Lets start with the different types of shells.

AP: You should use this ammo type the most. Has standard penetration and standard damage. Also pretty cheap. Exceptions will be howitzers where you only shoot HE. Has 5 degrees of normalization.

APCR: These types of ammo cost way more. However, in exchange, you get more penetration. You do get more shell velocity but you lose 2 degrees of normalization. If your using a tier 9 or 10 medium, you may get APCR as your standard ammunition and HEAT as your prammo. Meaning APCR costs less.

HEAT: Also prammo. Like APCR, but HEAT is weak against spaced armor and tracks. HEAT also has no normalization. If a tank has APCR and HEAT, HEAT will override APCR as the prammo.

HE: A type of ammunition that costs less than any other ammunition. Does more damage than any other ammunition, however comes at a horrible price, penetration. The penetration is horrible and will only have a chance penetrate if you are in the flat rear or sides of vehicle. Unless if the vehicle is extremely unarmored all around. If HE does not penetrate, it will most likely do splash damage. To know if splash damage is applicable to certain areas, go into sniper mode and all the yellow is the applicable areas for splash damage. Like HEAT, this is weak against spaced armor or tracks. However, this also has poor shell velocity. This type of ammunition should be used the least. And used only if you want to finish a tank off or reset the cap, or if you know you are going to penetrate the target.

HESH: Exactly like HE, but with more penetration. Still has lower penetration than normal AP. Could be prammo or replacements for HE.

AP (Premium): Basically AP but with increased penetration. Can be only found on premium tanks.

Shell abbreviations:

AP: Armor peircing

APCR: Armor piercing composite rigid

HEAT: High explosive anti-tank

HE: High explosive

HESH: High explosive squash head

Rarest to most common:

AP

APCR

HE

HEAT

HESH

AP (Premium)

For explaining penetration mechanics, I'm going to do a Q&A.

Q: How do I know if my shell is going to penetrate?

A: If you go into sniper mode, you can see the highlights of the tank. If an area has no highlights(Most tanks will show grey), you'll be able to penetrate. If the area is red, you will not penetrate. If the area is fainted red, you have a chance to penetrate. Chances vary to saturation of red. If the area is yellow, you can inflict splash damage.

Q: My shell didn't penetrate the armor!

A: Dont shoot red. Just... dont.

Q: I heard a *ting* sound and a white flash. What does that mean?

A: That means you have bounced a shot from a vehicle. Congratulations.

Q: I see a red mark. What does that mean?

A: You have been penetrated! Careful!

Q: I see faint white trace from the shell. What does that mean?

A: You have been shot by an AP or an AP (Premium) round.

Q: I see a white trace from the shell. What does that mean?

A: You have been shot by an APCR round

Q: I see fire

A: That song is overrated.

Q: I see a gold trace from the shell. What does that mean?

A: You have been shot by a HEAT round.

Q: I see a yellow trace from the shell. What does that mean?

A: You have been shot by a HE or HESH round.

Q: My gun clearly has more penetration than that tanks armor!!! Why did it bounce?

A: This is all about armor angling. If the armor is tilted at a 40 degree angle for example, and the armor is 40mm thick, it turns into 90mm thick. If you want to see the effective armor zones on the tank, go download Armor Inspector from google. They have all the tanks and you can see their armor.

Q: I have been penetrated, but I received no damage...?

A: Chances are, they shot your tracks or spaced armor. Shooting spaced armor may penetrate it, but it won't do any damage to the tank itself.

Q: I shot at grey parts and it said penetration, but it inflicted no damage. Whats going on?

A: That means you have penetrated spaced armor but you lost enough penetration to not be able to go through the normal armor. This happens alot with the is-3 side armor and the superpershing's turret front.

Glossary:

Prammo: Or premium ammunition, is a type of ammunition which costs more than standard. Prammo includes APCR, HEAT, HESH, AP (Premium). You can only have 1 type of prammo in a tank.

Shell velocity: The speed a shell travels in when shot.

Normalization: A special feature an AP shell or APCR shell has. If armor is angled at 100 degrees, AP shell will reduce the amount of angle from 100 to 95. APCR has 2 degrees less.

Spaced armor: Armor that is implanted onto the tank like glue. Isnt part of the actual armor of the tank. Space armor includes side skirts, ears of the T29, etc...

Splash damage: Splash damage is when you shoot an HE or HESH shell at an enemy, and fail to penetrate. However, the shell explodes and does minimal damage depending on your shell's caliber. If the AP shell does 400 damage, splash damage would do 100 damage.

Armor inspector: A free program made to let you view tanks and their armor zones. Shows raw armor and effective armor. Very useful if you are learning weakspots.

Hope this guide helps you!

HEAT does the same damage as AP and APCR.

HE costs more than APCR in Tier 10 mediums like E50M and Object 140.

Medium 1 shoots AP for gold for its 6-pdr gun.

You forgot the part where you shoot at a spot that's not red at all with a gun that could go through two IS's parked end to end and fail to pen.

That's russian bias
