I was just wondering how other people are playing this intersting tank. I've been running it like a turretless medium with good results. Sort of like how I'd play the Panther II. Often I will wolf pack with the other mediums, sometimes I take on more of a mobile sniper mode until late game and then brawl with the troll armor. Seems like there are a lot of ways to play this tank. Wondered how the rest of the community is running it.

P.S. Anyone else find this tank makes poor credits?

Best playstyle for SU-101 is to hit the sell button on it because it is inferior to every other TD at its tier.  No gun depression, weak armor, terrible DPM, but hey the speed is decent.  Seriously save yourself some pain and sell.

Never said it was good, I would argue for it being "eh." Honestly, I just love playing it because it is one of the only turretless medium tanks that gets that kind of speed. Turns it into...Tedium? Medistroyer? Either way, though, I want to go up that line. Gotta play it to make it to Obj 263.

Even if it does suck, the Obj 263 kills out there.

Yeah it doesn't stack well against its other TDs, but I don't think it's worth skipping. For some reason even though the gun was good, the stock grind was pretty bad. Was averaging less damage than the SU-100M1. Alpha and pen on top gun make a world of difference. Plus good players can abuse the speed so hard against your average pubby. While I would pick this tank to be competitive, it troll noobs really well. To me it is just a slightly bellow average tier 8, like the STA or Tiger II that fills its own little tactical niche pretty well, but lacks the raw awesomness of some of the more popular tier 8s (JP II, IS 3/ 3D, T44 ect).

I actually quite like the SU-101. It's low profile and quick, with a really big 122mm gun. I've played mine fairly aggressively, using the casemate armor to bounce shots while I hide the hull. If I can't do that, I snipe. Thanks to the mobility, it can appear in a different spot on the battlefield very easily, and with the camo, it's less likely to be spotted while doing so.

I snipe whenever I can, even with the 122. Places like Port bay where you can climb the hill on the one spawn, rock for the 101. If I cant find a viable sniping point, I either set up crossfires, or try (and fail) to peek a boom. Still learning armor use (if any)

Armor seems mostly troll. Hull down is obviously good, but gun depression makes it nearly impossible. On port bay I often go far hills where the meds normally do. Camo is often good enough that you aren't spotted.

Run with the mediums, I had a lackluster start in mine, but up to 65% now.

I tend to get focused a lot - which while hurting my SR, is allowing my team to capitalize.

Taking the hill on mines is generally not a good idea I have determined:facepalm:, as folks generally wreck you hard due to the lack of gun depression, if your meds need assistance, then yes go take one for the team, but otherwize posting by the cap rocks and wrecking their meds seems to be better for life span.

Spoiler

Well, I'm going to be a little contrary to most of the comments here and say that it can actually be a very dangerous tank. Sure, it's armor in bad, and it's gun handling is atrocious, but once you get it's T10 gun, this thing can absolutely wreck things. It's DPM skyrockets to ISU levels, and it's penetration has no trouble at all with T9s. And if you wiggle it a little during reload, you'll still be able to bounce a few shots with your mantlet, and the gun's aim time and accuracy will make up for it. Pretty much right after getting the best gun for it, I started doing 2000-3000 damage every battle. Not to mention it's insane maneuverability for a tank destroyer. Basically, it's not a bad tank, it's just a different sort of TD that should be played differently. You have to pretend to be a medium.

Thank you for starting this thread and all of the discussion, I am almost certainly the worst driver in the world on this one, and would like to progress to merely being awful .

You’re wrong. The mobility is the best of any T8 TD, it actually has pretty fantastic DPM with the top gun, it’s armor isn’t thick, but it’s well angled, a small target, and has a thick mantlet. These all combine to make it a difficult to play, but extremely rewarding TD that is capable of just about anything. Know what heaviums are right? Well this is a destium...or something like that.

Sorry but you are incorrect.  I said the mobility is good.  The DPM is good only on the low pen and low alpha gun.  So if using a gun with at best 40 less pen than same tier TDs it can do similar DPM if it stays exposed so it can keep firing(that gun has only 310 alpha).  The mobility advantage it has is mostly negated due to that low alpha AND the ridiculously bad gun depression.  The gun depression is so bad that you will end up not being able to take many shots that would otherwise be available to you.

The JP2 is a similar TD though better in almost every respect.  If you enjoy playing the SU-101 I recommend you give the JP2 a shot.

SU 101 has the second worst DPM among tier 8 TDs and is arguably the worst tank in the 263 line.

No gun depression, and the armor is pretty much non-existent even with all the angles.

It's frustrating to play - because it is not capable of anything at a high level.

It’s a tedium for me. The relatively low DPM, lack of gun depression and rear mounted turret make it bad in almost any role that I can think of. It requires a very high skill level to do well in, that I just don’t have.

I hate this thing more than the T-28 Proto and the T71 and that’s quite something.
