Fair ? Unfair ? ... Meh.
The thing is. It works both ways.
As a novice one can argue - and I have when I started playing this game - " I can count the coconuts on the palm tree on Oasis Palms or Desert Sands, but I can't see the tank parked under it ? That's (whatever) ".
The mechanics are what they are. WG will not change them, since they're at the core of WOT.
By the way. Just in case you don't know. If you fire a " blind " shot into where the enemy is/was, and it hits & pens the enemy, it will count the damage for your shot; and if it is a kill shot, it will count the kill.

Allow me to explain.
The matilda has a concealment value, known to many as "camo" value. Basically, it makes a tank harder to detect.
If a tank has no camo value, then it can be spotted anywhere within your effective view range. However, all tanks have some sort of camo value, so without any upgrades, you can't spot any tank within the edge of your view range.
Your tank may not have a maxed out crew, and the less experienced the crew, the less the view range. So when you looked at your tank's view range, you probably thought that the amount advertised in the statistics page was the range in where you could spot any tank. But, if you only have a 75% crew, your effective view range will not be the amount advertised on the statistics page.
So that matilda was probably spotted by an ally, but you were thinking that your own crew spotted it. Then the matilda moved out of the ally's view, and it became unspotted, and your view range wasn't enough to see the matilda with it's camo value. A few seconds later you spotted it with your view range, as it got close enough for your view range to see through it's camo.

I don't think it's unfair. If that opponent has the crew camo skill to become invisible at that range then good on him. Blind shots still hit and do damage. I blind shoot known camping spots all the time. If it doesn't hit you know it and if it does you can tell as well.
Maybe you need to install coated optics or binocs on your tank if you want to see better. There's ways to keep tanks insight. Understand the game mechanics. You have 6000+ games.
And stop playing tier 8 and 9 till you get a better understanding for you and your teammates sanity.

They reappear when they fire because firing your gun reduces your camo value.
