How To Play A KV-1 Without The Derp Against Tier 7's

Currently, I'm using the 122mm howitzer on the KV-1 and that allows me to be able to do some good chunks of damage to enemy Tier 7 tanks when I get bottom-tier battles. However, I've only been using the 122 for about 20 games. Before that, I had to battle Tier 7's with the stock 76mm gun and then rapid-fire 57mm gun. And yet I still played pretty well against them. Here's what you need to know to be able to have a good game against Tier 7's in a KV-1 with the 76mm or 57mm guns.

Part 1: Playing With The 76mm Stock Gun Against Tier 7 Tanks

Chapter 1: Equipment And Crew

As a general rule for any tank, you should have a Med Kit and Repair Kit as your first two consumables. Next, I would consider Adrenaline so you have a better chance against Tier 7's. For Equipment, I'd suggest a Gun Rammer, Coated Optics, and Vents. Also, make sure your crew is at least 75%. Never, ever, play ANY tank (not just the KV-1!) with less than a 75% crew. If you don't have the silver to get 75% crew when you first purchase a tank, play other tanks to make the necessary silver.

Chapter 2: Necessary Upgrades In Order To Stand A Chance

Although you can still do okay against Tier 7's with the stock 76mm gun, a few other upgrades are absolutely necessary. First, you need the upgraded tracks to lessen ground resistance and to be able to achieve greater speed. In addition, it unlocks the T-150 for you. With the stock suspension, the KV-1 is nearly as slow as the T95, but with the upgraded suspension, the KV-1 can reach speeds of around 27 km/h. Next, you'll need the upgraded (rounded) turret. It adds some HP, the turret rotates faster, and you're that much closer to the 85mm gun. Admittedly, it adds some weight and knocks down the top speed to 25 km/h, but it is very much beneficial to survival in a Tier 7 battle. Finally, you'll want to upgrade the engine to the M-17T. This is a much better engine than the stock M-17L. If you really want to, you can upgrade to the V-2K engine as well. While it does unlock the KV-1S, all it does is lessen the chance of fire at the cost of 0.14 tons in added weight.

Chapter 3: What To Do In A Tier 7 Battle With The 76mm Gun

Try to follow other heavies, and use extreme caution. Always angle your armor, be careful around corners, and never take an eye off the minimap. Higher-tier heavies will lead the way, doing some damage to the enemy tanks. While the enemies are distracted with the high-tier heavies, you can flank them and hit weakspots.

If you're too cautious of following higher-tier heavies, try to stay with similar-tiered tanks (e.g. M4, VK3001H, T-34) and lead the charge. Instead of going for the cap, you should flank, since the higher-tier tanks usually swarm the cap.

And if all else fails, snipe. Do be warned that the 76mm gun has bad penetration, so load some HE just in case. Time your shots so they come right after another friendly's. That way, not only do you deal more damage, you can bewilder an enemy because a second shot came in such a short amount of time as the tank who had made the first shot had an autoloader gun (which, as of yet in Blitz, is impossible).

Part 2: Using The 57mm Gun In A Tier 7 Battle

Chapter 1: Equipment

If you're using the 57mm gun, it has an excellent rate of fire. Therefore, you can drop the Rammer and replace it with Camo or a Spall Liner (since quite a few Tier 5, 6, and 7 tanks can have devastating howitzers and a few are good rammers). Keep the Med Kit, Repair Kit, and Adrenaline for your Consumables and the Optics and Vents for your equipment in addition to Camo or the Liner.

Chapter 2: Necessary Modules

You'll need the same modules as outlined in the same section for the 76mm gun.

Chapter 3: Your Role In A Tier 7 Battle With The 57mm Gun

The 57mm gun has super-high penetration and is very accurate as well. You have four options, each with its pros and cons: support high-tier heavies, lead similar-tier tanks, snipe, or go hull down.

If you choose to go with higher-tier heavies, the gun is accurate enough and has high enough penetration to easily hit weakspots without the need for HE. Continue to be extremely cautious with your armor and keep watching the minimap, however. Don't get caught out in the open, and make sure enemies can't hit your own weakspots: the front viewport and your ammo rack.

For sniping and leading similar-tier tanks, do the same as you would with the 76mm gun.

Because the 57mm gun has an excellent rate of fire and high penetration, coupled with pretty good gun depression (a unique feature for the KV-1 compared to other Russian tanks), you can go hull down to good effect. The KV-1's good turret armor allows for this, but watch out for your ammo rack. It is a major weakspot of the KV-1, especially when you are fighting tanks equipped with devastating howitzers which can easily end your battle with a single shot to the side of your turret.

I hope you can do better in Tier 7 battles with the KV-1 after reading this guide! Constructive criticism is welcomed.

Did you use the 85mm or the 57mm?

I only really like the derp because I don't have to worry about aiming for weakspots (though it does help to. I aimed at the cupola of a T-150. A KV-1S was behind it. Thanks to splash damage, I killed both of them). I think I'm going to switch back to the 57mm though, because dat DPM tho.

True, but it has less DPM. The 85mm is the best of all the KV-1's guns, but the 57mm is the way to go until you get there. And you want to at least unlock the 122 so you'll have it for the KV-1S and T-150 so you don't have to use the terrible stock 76mm (though the latter also has the option to use the 57mm).

Honestly, I never found a need for it. I don't catch fire too often, especially now that I have the V-2K engine.

In the Russian heavies I use a repair kit, adrenaline, and a multi-repair kit. This allows you to get tracks up twice if needed, which you may if angling or side scraping effectively. The multi-repair takes care of crew heals, fire, and any other repairs. I would likely only swap out the simple repair kit for extra rations when fighting with a crew below 100%.

The 57 to me doesn't seem viable for tier 7s. Every time I see a kv-1 with the 57 I get really happy because I know I can out trade them. With the 85 when he hit's me it's gonna hurt.

Depends on what Tier 7's you speak of. T29 you're not going to pen with the 57 without shooting gold, but I can pen KV-3 and IS weakspots reliably.
