My first impressions from my first (and so far only match; it was late at night) are that it's... Not bad at stock. I've had some awful stock experiences- the VK. 30.01 H still gives me flashbacks of how abysmal it was- but this wasn't one. The gun's got okay pen, though the damage is mediocre. Even then the reload is decently fast for my 50% crew (I spent all my money on the IS itself; I'm gonna grind with my KV2 to get the money to boost my crew to 75%,) the turret turns quick with the two gas upgrades as well. Even so, it's relatively slow; it didn't make more than 30km. Overall it's meh, but I can tell that it's gonna be something of a beast when fully upgraded.

So, what do you guys think of the Iosef Stalin? Any tips for it?

Give it new equipment before you send it into battle.

Sending a tier 7 into battle without equipment is a crime.

Something that is less morally questionable than where I currently stand.

Yeah. I plan to get it the Gun Rammer, Vents, and either the Gun Laying Drive, Repair Kit, or Spall Liner.

Then again, the first two are complete no brainers. I'll probably get the GLD.

Tier 7 heavies are all bad, WG nerfed them hard a long time ago and then introduced tons of good medium and light tanks.  Good luck.

Unlock the 122mm gun. I use the 122mm on mine and play it a a peek-a-boom tank. I have done over 5k damage with it.

Armor is somewhat good, that 122 is where its at, and remember there are two small weaakpoints on the turret that sit RIGHT on either side of the gun ( and the sides of the turret are weak )

I'm going to reiterate this but also the same for having a 50% trained crew from the start.  Just shell out for the 75%.  You will save more silver in the long run and win a lot more games than if you handicap your tank by putting a half trained crew in it.

IS is a good tank.  I sold mine because I was lucky enough to get an IS-2.  Tier VII heavies aren't bad - KV-3 is heavier and easier to use I think but IS is great at dominating as long as you don't sit still in the open.  IS tanks are made to attack and that's why they're the more mobile ones.

ditto. Gun handling on this thing is just bad and every bit helps.

I can run a few tier 7 games with you if you need help grinding this thing out, just add me in game.

The IS was a. Erz strong tank init's day, before they nerfed the ROF into the ground. Now it is easy to kill them, most Same Tier Meds can rush it after it shoots and kill it and take maybe one hit.

I agree in GLD, the ROF is so low that you need to make sure you hit your target and the GLD helps with it. Stay within support range of your team to avoid getting rushed. The tank is fast enough fully upgraded to run with Meds and can intimidate with it's Alpha.

The IS in general is fairly quick for a heavy tank. In mine I would go at around 30kmh, and when I'm on a road, 35kmh. I grinded my IS from stock. The grind was fairly easy, as the stock gun Isn't too bad, I've gotten some pretty good games in it, I have around 8 or so battles with 2,400 damage.

Get the D-25T gun before the IS3. It will help A LOT in the long run. That way when you have IS3, you will be able to grind for the BL-9 gun immediatly. That's what I did, and the next day after getting the IS3, I already had the BL9 gun and the top turret.
