Without a doubt, the most important thing you should focus on is Not Taking Damage.  Survival and winrate are absolutely linked.  Your whole strategy should revolve around doing damage without taking damage yourself.

Make a call at the start of a match.  Keeping the team together or guiding them is critical to keep the plebs from scattering.  On town maps, call to go away from town.  On maps with hills, get to the hills and get hull-down.  On Copperfield, you need heavies to hill and meds to flank.  Even a simple <<<< or >>>> at the start of a game can keep the team together.  If 2 tanks go alone, they might run into many more reds and get rekt.  That usually turns into a loss.

What kind of tank are you?  Heavy?  Head to the front line with other heavies, but make sure you go with strength and not alone.  If your whole team camps, you're best to camp with them.  Medium?  Follow the heavies and look for flanking opportunities, or (carefully!) play scout, esp if you have optics or binocs mounted, and never go more than 1/3 of the map away from your team - you need covering fire from teammates or a means of retreat if you get into trouble.  If you're a TD you can follow your heavies and use their view range to hit targets in front of them, or if you're a heavily armored TD you can join the front line.  On most maps (Copperfield and Castilla being notable exceptions) a one-group approach is better than a split team.  And always go hills rather than town - town engagements are usually a bad place to start.

Map reading is key.  Where might the reds go after spawning?  What's their team make-up?  Where might their mediums go?  Their heavies?  Their TDs?  It takes quite a few battles to master this art of predicting where the reds might go but develop that skill.  Always keep an eye on the map so you'll know where your teammates and your enemies are.  My progress these days is learning to be in the right place when the reds are sighted so that I can maximize my damage potential and minimize my risks of taking damage.

Even if you can't see the reds, they might be able to see you. If you've been spotted by one red their whole team can see your location.  This is why cover is so important. Hide your tank from where the Reds *might* be; stick to the edges of the map or at least someplace where the Reds are only going to be on one side of you.  Being out in the open is almost certain death; get terrain or a rock or a building beside you. Expose only your turret, and minimize even that. You may heard of "hull down": where your tank's hull is unexposed so it can't be hit, and you expose just the gun and turret to fire. Rocks, terrain and even dead tanks can provide great cover.

Learn to sidescrape - a term unique to WoT where you hide the front of your tank against an obstacle and expose the side at a very shallow angle (<20 degrees) so that enemy shells bounce off the sides. You back up, shoot, then move forwards against the building to reload.   Angling is the same - you're presenting your target with more effective armor or your tracks.  Let your tracks eat shots!  Beware of overmatching shells.  If your tank's armor is thinner than 1/3 the shell caliber, the shell will pen no matter what.  For example, an IS-3 has a 30mm plate behind the gun mantlet.  The T-29's 105mm shell will always pen this area no matter what angle the shell hits at.

HE shells have higher damage, but only if they pen.  That's a basic thing but worth stating for future readers.  So many players use derp guns firing low-velocity low-caliber HE shells thinking they'll get big damage.  They may get none at all.

Always look at the map.  Where are the reds?  Where are the greens?  Stay close to your team (1/3 of map) so if you're under fire, they can fire back on your behalf.  Knowing where you, your allies and your enemies are at all times is called "situational awareness" (SA).

Learn to shoot in arcade mode.  Never drive in sniper mode.  You can scope in, aim, then scope out to fire so you can keep your situational awareness as high as possible.  Learn to aim and fire as much as possible in arcade mode, by adjusting your view so that the reticle is centered on your opponent.

Always look around.  When watching Blitz vids note they always look around all. the. time.  Before a shot, after a shot, to see if anyone is aiming at them.  Use the Lookout Area (enable it in your Settings) to look all around you frequently.  Use the Lookout Area to allow you to peek around buildings to see if a red tank is pointing its gun away from you - pop out, get the shot, and pull back.  Don't trade HP - look for opportunities to take the reds' health without losing your own.  At wotbstars.com, check out your damage ratio - work on getting to 1.0 and beyond.  Some people around here have 2.5 damage ratios - crazy!  But just work on getting to parity for now.

Learn to survive - make it a goal to survive at least the first half of the match, and then to the end.  Preserve your HP.  Don't yolo.  If you and one or two allies run into 4 reds, you need to retreat or have cover handy so you can survive till the rest of the team saves you.  It's important to determine where all reds are so that you don't stumble on a large number of them and end up a smoking heap of metal.

Get Armor Inspector and study it.  Where are tanks' weak spots?  The modules?  When driving a tank, know your strong spots and weak spots so you know what to expose and what to hide.  Map Inspector is from the same developer and shows you how far you can "see" on a map with your tank's view range.

Watch a ton of YouTube videos.  Bushka on Blitz is possibly the best YouTube educational channel out there for WoTB players!  Anon is fantastic and is a paragon of good gameplay.  See links below:

MSixteen: Videos (sadly, his channel doesn't have playlists)

Last but not least, you can't play with a bad internet connection.  Any lag in your router or connection will trash your chances at winning.  Your ping needs to be consistently under 100ms with no packet loss.  Check the Pingplotter link first and go from there.

PS: I've totally taken over an old thread to make this topmost post - so the rest of the thread will make no sense, lol
