The AMX m4 45, the predecessor of the ARL 44, is possibly the most underbalanced tank in the game. Why is it even classified as a heavy? It has no armor that can compete with the tanks in it's tier. It is the size of Russia, the gun's accuracy prevents you from hitting anything even if fully aimed, and the turret even gets penned. You cannot utilize the gun depression due to the weak turret. And popping up and down on the ridge will not work either due to the terrible gun handling. This tank really has nothing going for it except the superb dpm which is really only useful in close combat which you can't do either because you have no armor. Your speed will get you no where because the enemy team will have a huge side to shoot while you are moving. Maybe it's just the French design or maybe there could be something improved? Either way I am not satisfied at all with this tank and have found it the hardest to grind. The only good thing is that it makes money easily... Which considering that it will ruin your winrate anyway you're going to need those extra credits

I think they messed up twice on the new line of tanks

I think the ARL 44 got the armor of the AMX M4 45...and vice versa...how else does it make sense to have armor go down so much and share same gun...doesn't add up

and the BDR view range/dpm mistake

I find it to be one an extremely good tank.  Best gun you can get to deal with is spam at tier 7 besides the gun on the Emil but that tank is aweful

How do you play it? Cause I've tried everything and I've found that this tank depends entirely on the competence of the team which at it's tier is very low

It doesn't need a buff. I'm doing around the same average damage in it than I am in my tier 8s, and I grinded the tank completely stock like everything else in the line. Play it like a Centurion 1.

The M4 45 is a great tank. Amazing gun for its tier. If your complaining about its armor compared to other heavies already at tier 7. I suggest you play a different tank line

I'm actually thinking about using the 105 instead of the 90 because it has better alpha. Peeking over a ridge doesnt work with 1. Bad turret armor and 2. Bad reverse speed.

So if you're going to get shot trying to be useful on Mines, might as well make them hurt at least as much as you will.

I can deal with the armor considering I have played the tiger 1 which this tank reminds me of, but the gun is so troll on it. I can be fully aimed and miss by a mile or I can be moving with 100% bloom and still hit. This tank is bipolar I swear lol and thanks for the welcome

Good mobility and 10 degrees of gun depression. Try exploiting those features. I actually settled on using the 105mm gun because the DPM is the same and this tank can't take a punch.

But yeah, comparing it to other tier 7s like the T-43 and Rudy make it seem not so great...

Ok but the only thing that concerns me is the amount of prammo I will have to use with the low pen on the 105

The turret is fairly bouncy but not reliable. When you feel a shot coming swing the turret slightly. Use the -10 gun depression to minimize your exposure. The 90 mm seems better due to the penetration at the tier even though I liked the 105 mm better on the ARL. Always go in a platoon.... this isn't a solo carrier tank.

I'm having a bit of a rough go with it as well, but it's great compared to the T54e1. Notch up the hyperbole in the OP and it's about accurate for the e1.

One thing for sure, it's a total style change from the previous tanks in the line. More like a KV13 with better depression and worse everything else.

Yeah I used the 105mm on the ARL but switched to the 90mm on the AMX M4 45. The pen really helps at tier 7, whereas at tier 6 it was just overkill pen.

I've found the tank to be a huge step down from the ARL, but it isn't underpowered. It shares a lot of features of the Tiger I. Tiger I can brawl a bit better and AMX is faster and can do medium tank style hull down harassment better.

My advice to the OP is to stop classifying tanks into neat little boxes. Just because this tank doesn't fit what your label of a heavy should be doesn't make it a bad tank. If this tank doesn't have enough armor for you, then you better just quit the line right here and now.

Edit: Basically, trying to play the AMX like a heavy will work about as well as playing the Valentine II as a Light.

I skipped from the ARL 44 to the AMX 50 100 because I was lazy and had no wish to play a tank that looks like a pile of garbage. Although I think I was right, I've found that enemy AMX M4's that use the 105mm are far more effective than those equipping the 90mm. Logic is that they spend less time in vulnerable positions due to longer reload, which trades off well with the higher alpha damage.

Based purely on how enemy AMX M4's perform I'd agree it needs a buff, probably gun handling and/or frontal turret armor.

I'm still feeling this tank out, but it seems fine to me

Also remember 1450 hit points is pretty outrageous for a tier 7.
