So I have a family member's account who hasn't played much and they only have a Camo Skill rating of 1.  I have a camo skill rating of 5 - in the same tank (T49) side by side, the difference before being spotted when stationary was about 10m.  With a medium tank (Pz III/IV) the difference was a bit greater, say 12-15m.  But on the whole, I was surprised at how little a difference camo skill makes to the visibility of a tank.  It makes me wonder if the game isn't working properly - but I don't know the formula for spotting distance so there you are.

Has anyone else got any experience with this?

Rip me grinding it to level 6, I don't know if it actually helps either. Someone please do tell

Camo skill doesn't add 18% to your camo rating. It just multiplies your base camo value by 1.18

So in an arbitrary situation where the enemy has 230M view range and you have 15% base camo (slightly above average)

Without camo skill, you are spotted at 203M = 230-(230-50)*.15

With lvl 6 camo skill, you are spotted at 198M = 230-(230-50)*(.15*1.18)

And there you have it. ~10M difference seems about right

10m is still a 2.5% decrease, which is respectable.

Don't have any "official" studies, but a few months back when I first bought the e25, I didn't research the camo skill at all. However, I did have enough crew XP to switch over to it and grind it past lvl 4 camo skill (12% iirc). Difference was a slightly delayed lightbulb in an already stealthy tank. I wanna say that I could close in at least 10-20 more meters before getting lit between not having the skill at all and dumping a bunch of XP into making it lvl 4.

Someone should play around with this in the training room. One red tank with known view range and an opposing team of identical tanks, all with different loadouts of camo, equipment, etc. Put out a thread requesting someone who hasn't researched the camo skill yet and compare. Have the red tank camp spawn on a flat map, then move out the green tanks one by one and have them stop as soon as the lightbulb flashes. Then use rangefinder to measure exact distances and use said observations to come up with a formula.

Now @ 15 Tier 10s: E50M, E100, FV215B, FV4202, IS-4, IS-7, JagdPanzer E100, M48 Patton, Obj. 140, Obj. 268, STB-1, T110E3, T110E4, T110E5, T-62A

The TR is exactly where I tested it out - and it bears out Panzermk6's math.  Thanks man - nice to have the confirmation of the effect.  Slightly disappointing!

I,ve got level 6 camo,  and I notice an improvement in medium and lights.  Heavy some not much.

It's not full proof but helps.

I carry Coated optics to negate peoples camo skill, 10 meters can easily be the difference between getting killed or carrying the game.

Camo skill of 6 only works with equipment. See below for the different examples of an M10 Wolverine and T49 at 100% crew skill, Cammo skill of 1 and 6, with Camo Paint vs. a Panzer IV with 100% Crew, Small Food, Super Food, Vents, Optics and Binocs

In this example:

The Panzer fully equipped has an overall view range of 323m with binocs and 284m with optics. The problem is that the TD's are only visible at a distance of 152m/179m while sitting still and 197m/213m when shooting. So even though the Panzer can see that far, with the camo factor played in, he has to close to spot them.

Spoiler

In example 2:

The TD's are now at Camo level VI. Their visiblity drops to 136/166 sitting still and 187/205 moving.

Spoiler

Where it gets interesting though is if the TD's also have binocs, foods, and vents equipped. Their view range jumps to: 310/323m sitting still. The panzer with Camo VI and paint is visible at 225m sitting still and 245m moving. In essence, the TD's will spot the Panzer about 75m sooner than the Panzer will spot the TD's with the TD's at a Crew Skill of I and right around 100m at level VI.

I have been quite interested in the subject, but found that the data from WG or other sites formula is limited and confusing at best.  I'd need some extra detail to get a handle on it.

Numbers on stationary tanks are nice, but would the camo skill have a greater effect on the tanks post-firing visibility, as the value is larger? Or is that just bad logic?

Let's face it, they don't even know what it will be and even if they do, they'll probably implement it wrong.
