If I'm in a low-profile medium or light, what I'll often do is go to the hill directly next to the cap and maybe get a few spots. If nothing is contesting me, I'll immediately cap. With this strategy I have about a 75% success rate, with the enemies either panicking to reset the cap and running straight into our TDs, or they'll just fail to reset and I cap the team to victory. The thing about Fort Despair is that the little walls in the cap provide excellent cover from the enemies' spawn and the other side of the map. Often the only way to reset is to drive into the cap itself, which is directly in the line of fire of my team covering for me.

 

However, a bunch of people have called me a noob and stuff when I try to cap but fail. Is capping on Fort Despair actually a viable strategy, or am I just an idiot getting lucky?

At least in my experience it depends on the tier and team make-up. I find that strategy to be easier in the lower tiers but I would only use that particular maneuver as a quick effort at a diversion in the higher tiers as it's probably not expected on this map.

Depends if you have strong back support.

depends if team knows how to defend a cap, which, capping being so rare, few people have the skills and intelligence. 

 

also, noobs can ruin any perfect plan.

It's a matter of opportunity. One batte I was in my KV1 in another map, when I decided to go directly from start and cap instead of going to dunes. Just because I was bored. All the reds went dunes and battled my team. I don't know if it was because of the fight or if they were novice that they didn't realize or didn't hear the siren, but nobody came to base, the clock went to 100 and we won. Very amusing.

Works in a KV-1 or Pz II J for sure.

In my STB-1 or recently bought 215B, I tend to do that. These days it's the only place I go truthfully, around the cap. Spot the mid hill in my mediums if they have a lot of heavies so I can get side shots when they go into town, and if they have a lot of mediums, it's straight to the cap to farm dmg's.

Cap=Pressure. Make them come to you, and damage them and track them for your team waiting in the wings/flank. Lower profile the better, but I did it in an M60, just have to keep moving back and forth.

Capping on any map is a great pressure point to apply to the reds. Makes them have to change their plan, or accelerate it. 

 

ALSO - who likes to have sirens going off in their ears or their team yiping "protect the cap" - ANSWER - NO ONE.

The thing about capping early on most maps is it takes a gun out of the battle most of the time. I think if you're in a KV-1 at Desert Sands, and red and green go dunes you can wait a few minutes before you put pressure on the cap. But all it takes is 1 or 2 flankers from Red to mess up your capping plans. I've seen it at Black Goldville several times lately and all it does it tell me where the reds are.

 

However, I am intrigued by the possibilities at Fort Despair.....

While the game is preparing to run, I suggest to the team that we allow the other team to cap ( we're talking about Fort Despair here, but I believe it applies to Copperfield as well). In the case of Copperfield, the team that attempts, at least an early cap, has done two bad things. 1) they announced to the opposition exactly where they are, and 2) they've managed to place themselves in a big barrel. If you're team has elected to remain on high ground, then you can literally start shooting fish in that barrel. The same applies to Fort Despair, albeit not quite as drastic. Capturing broadcasts you position, and tells the opposition how much time they have to deal with you. A mature team knows they don't need to hit you until something less than 50 remains. Meanwhile your gun is probably out of the game, and the bad guys can gang up on your team. Full disclosure, I've seen your approach work many time. That said, I've seen your approach fail at least twice as much as it works.
