Was just curious if there are any others playing this, i'm sure there must be. Apologies if there's already a thread for this, maybe should have searched first.

What got me thinking about if there were other tankers playing was reading some of the strategy guides posted by other players. Specifically, I started laughing when the guide was talking about fighting hull down and coming out of defilade to fire but called it "peek-a-BOOM." I dunno, it made me laugh seeing something I'd been trained to do talked about like that in a video game.

Can't make tank go boom without the mechs. I'll tell you what though there was no sound in the world, hell no vehicle in the world, I hated more than the obnoxiously loud M88 recovery vehicle. Firing up right as someone was about to pass word, firing up before first light to run their damn heater, trying to talk to your buddy?  Mike 88 on queue: BRAAAAA CRA CRA CRA CRA BRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAHHHH CRA CRA CRA. Used to drive me absolutely nuts, right up until I heard one coming to pick up me and my guys and drag away my blown up tank.

Now I guess it's not that bad.

Was it? I haven't seen it. I agree with him though, no feeling in the world like strapping into a 70 ton monster and feeling the blast wave and recoil of a 120mm cannon. If I lived to be a hundred I don't think I could forget the sound of that turbine engine coming to life on start up, either.

OBTanker, that must've been quite awhile ago huh? The 60s were long gone before my time, I've only seen one on static display.

Yeah it was awhile ago, 1983-'87. But as you'll prolly agree, it sticks with ya - a lot of that stuff seems like yesterday!

M60A3 was quite a tank - the Thermal Sight was better than the M1's, and the old 105mm was ridiculously accurate. Not to brag an myself, but I shot the left 2x4 leg out from under a bore sight panel on a bet, and at the NTC my gunner get an award for a 4,000 yard kill on their live fire range. Truly, if you could see it you could/would kill it.

When I got to Germany we transitioned to the M1IP, still had the 105mm but MAN was that thing a hot rod! Our first maneuvers at Hohenfels, we were overrunning the opfor guys before WE knew what was going on!  Having the driver do wheelies in German villages during Reforger was a lot of fun...

Charlie9797, you enlist (choose) to be a Tanker in the US Army, it's actually a pretty technical job. I scored pretty high on the ASVAB (entrance exam) and could have done most anything but I wanted to be a Tanker ( recruiter thought I was nuts) because 1: my Dad was a Tanker, 2: I was born in Munich, and always wanted to go to Germany, and 3: Tanks are cool.

Br1xton, you need to go see Fury. Yes I got that saying from the movie, but it's true in a lot of ways.

I bet you'll want the DVD when it comes out.

:justwait:

Hi all, old tanker here. Did 20+ years in tanks, M60, M60A1-A2, M1 and M1A1. Missed the M551 Sheridan, if you could call a Sheridan a Tank, and the M60A3 and yes it had a better thermal sight than the M1.   Will not change a single second of those 21 years. But of all the tanks I played/worked on the ones I liked the most were the M1/A1 with the 120 mm smooth bore and the M60A2 "Starship" with its stubby 152mm cannon/missile launcher.  That Shillelagh anti-tank guided missile was fun to shoot specially if everything worked the way it was supposed to.  In my opinion, the M60A2 was to advance/complicated for its time, but man, what a fun tank to play with.

Met Dialman in Germany when we were assigned to 2/66 Arm, and yes, he was a hell of a mechanic, btw, Dialman, I do remember you now that you told me your name.

I chose tanks when I enlisted because i thought, why walk everywhere when I can ride a tank.

Brixton, you are so right, the first time I read that word. peek-a-boom i almost fell off my chair laughing my [edited]off.  But I tell you, this game has me glued to my ipad all day long, and Dialman, you are right, it felt good to see Fury's bumper number during the movie even though probably I was the only one that felt that way in the theater.

My service was as follows,

A Co 1/37 Armor (The Palace Guards), 1st Armored Div (Old Ironsides), Ansbach, Germany. 1975-1977

A Co 2/69 Armor, 197th Inf Bde, Ft Benning, Ga 1977-1980

A Co 1/64 Armor, 3rd Inf Div. Kitzingen, Germany 1980-1983

C Co 1st School Bde, FT Knox, Ky 1983-1985 as an Instructor for ANOC and Basic Officers School, training 2LTs to become tankers

B Co and D Co 1/66 Armor, 2nd Armored Div (Hell on Wheels), Ft Hood, Tx 1985-1987

A Co and D Co 2/66 Armor, 2nd Armored Division (FWD) 1987-1992 with a break for Desert Shield/Storm

D Co and HHC 3/69 Armor, 24th Inf Div/3rd Inf Div 1992-1995 with many returns back to Kuwait (Rapid Reaction Force)

OLE TANKERS NEVER DIE! They just rattle away

When I enlisted the Marine Corps would not write a contract guaranteeing you for tanks, you had to sign a "combat support" contract which would allow the Marines to assign you as a number of different jobs. I wanted tanks but I could have wound up with amtracks (BOOOOO), artillery, low altitude air defense or a few other jobs I don't remember. I just happened to luck out. It's my understanding that if you enlist with the Marines today, you can sign a contract for tanks though. That's what a couple boots have told me but really it doesn't matter, they haven't made any real tankers since they closed down tank school at Ft. Knox if you ask me.
