There are several reasons why American family situations more and more follow that of other nations ... 

 

Less cheap credit, increased student debt, fewer employment options, carreer over family, marrying later in life, cost of housing, cost of health insurance, cost of living, ...

It's the participantion trophy era.  No drive to stand on your own feet, compete and win.  They just want life handed to them.

I actually had to take a training class on how to deal with Millennials at work.  Sad.

Worth noting that kids living at college are counted as "living at home", and given that college attendance rates increased from 1975 to 2016, that's influencing the increase.
