As some of you may know, cod WW2 came out today and I played the whole campaign. Well at one point you get to drive an M4. You have to fight a PZ-4 and a Tiger 2. After many struggles I finally took down the PZ-4 and I attempted to COD the Tiger 2 and failed pretty bad. Also I couldn't pen the front of a PZ-4 :(

If you watch some interviews with real M4 crew members, they say that penning a Panzer IV frontally was problematic as well. It depended on what version of the M4 they had and it's armament. The firefly wasn't only necessary for Panthers and Tigers. It's only in this game that the Panzer IV is paper. It was a very effective machine. That's one reason they made so many of them compared to their other vehicles.

Sherman tank crews were also fond of shooting center mass. Straight at that angled bit.

Well, many of the later war Panzer IV's (starting with Ausf G, first produced in March 1942) that the Sherman would have faced had 80mm of armor in the front (just like in game). A lot of the earlier Sherman models we used before the arrival of the E3 models with the 76mm used the 75mm M3, which only had 81mm of penetration at 500M (50% success rate) , so if the Panzer IV is at 500M, unangled, Sherman only has a 50% chance to pen, and if it's angled it won't pen at all, and any further than 500M, the Sherman stands no chance unless they can hit the turret.

The M4 Sherman itself has about 80mm of effective frontal protection, but the Panzer IV's long barreled 75mm has a 50/50 chance to pen 86mm of armor all the way at 2000M, and with APCR, can do so at about 2500M.

However, the upgunned 76mm versions of the Sherman firing AP will pen 79mm at 1750M with a 50/50 chance, and when firing APC (armor piercing capped) will pen 81mm of armor at 2500M with a 50/50 chance, which pretty much evens the score with the Panzer IV.

But against the short-barreled 75mm Shermans, the advantage of the Panzer IV is clear. The Germans can destroy Shermans at 4-5x the range, whereas the Sherman has to get within 500M to even have a chance to contest the armor of the Panzer IV.

Against a Tiger II? lol good luck. The side of the thing is 80mm. Although more realistically, it should have been out of gas when you run into it since when they were being produced, German had major fuel shortages, and Tiger II gets 1/2 mile to the gallon, and a huge amount of them were lost because the crews were forced to abandon them when they ran out of gas.

But then again, COD is actually not that far fetched of a tactic. At St Vith, an M8 armored car destroyed a Tiger II by getting around behind it and shooting the engine 3 times.

Look at the Sherman closely. It doesn't exist. It is a fiction model. T23 mantlet on a LOWE BUSTLE turret. welded hull too.
