How Not to Suck 101
Hello, I’m HumanCoookie from the NA server. Anyway, I decided to create this thread to help players new or vet learn some new tactics and information on the game. Though this is more focused on new and unskilled players, anyone is welcome to read this. I will continue to revise and add more to this (similar to my post in Suggestions and Feedback). Unique matches where I observe some of the players inspire some of these topics. Feel free to send this forum link to those who you think need some serious education. Also, take note: Numbering of the suggestions below isn't related to each of their worth (least to greatest, etc). And I HIGHLY recommend watching PC WoT's YouTube channel as they provide amazing explanations about simple things in the game.

1. YOLOing
2. Shell/Ammo Load Outs
Using the correct shell type (AP, APCR, HE, etc.) is an easy topic. Most commonly, a player should choose to fire more of the standard rounds (usually AP) than any other round the tank can carry. Tanks with very high rate of fire will need lots of shells so buy lots of shells. It all comes down to the tank statistics basically. If the tank being used is a KV-1 then I would buy 25 AP, 10 APCR, and 5 HE. Enough standard to fight the enemy team, enough premium ammo to fight higher tier tanks, and not as much HE since not that many tanks will be able to be penetrated by HE. Generally, the rule of thumb is more standard ammo than anything else with some premium ammo and little HE. Keep in mind all the tanks in WoTB are unique in their own ways and that rule of thumb won't apply to certain tanks, such as the Fv. 183 or T49. Though, not buying incredible amounts of ammo for tanks that don't need a lot of it saves a lot of credits on first purchase.
3. Basic Information on Certain Ammo & Their Qualities
4. Spotting
Playing in a medium or light tank means you need to spot, it's pretty much your role in the battlefield. Spotting means you locate and find the enemies on the enemy team. This is crucial early game because you find out where the enemy is moving. Spotting for your team means if you locate an enemy tank then most likely your team will be able to shoot it. Trying to spot enemies at the very start of the game is one of the best things you can do for your team. Enemy scouts might go to the same positions as you go to, though, so be prepared to defend yourself. Also, there are 7 spotting checkpoints and 2 view range checkpoints on every tank in the game. Basically if one of your spotting checkpoints is visible to an enemy view range checkpoint you are spotted by the enemy. Hiding in bushes (refer to 28.) will hide those checkpoints and help you remain un-spotted. Since describing the locating of each spotting checkpoint and viewpoint checkpoint will be too complicated and some spotting techniques are too complicated to cover in this thread, refer to this video by WG about it: https://www.youtube....h?v=RMF82fz4kDk
Video Timestamps
-2:00 to 3:00 for locations of checkpoints.
-3:10 to 4:00 and 4:10 to 4:30 for an unmentioned, in the thread, spotting technique.
-4:30 to 5:05 on how to correctly hide in a bush.

12. Don't Block Friendlies

15. Tank Types
Playing what your tank is designed to do is key to winning a battle. Play a heavy like a heavy, a med like a med, and etc. There are 4 tank types, each type better or worse at certain tasks compared to the others. It's honestly not hard to abide by common sense and actually do stuff. If you are in a heavy, go do heavy things such as holding the front line. Mediums and lights flank, spot, sometimes go front line, mediums are more of a jack of all trades, master of none type of tank, though. Tank destroyers stay in the back and provide somewhat of a support role with their guns. Though, some tank destroyers can be played like front line tanks and do a pretty good job of it. Please, don't be that person that snipes in their heavy tank. You should be on the front line helping your team, not sniping from a distance with a tank cannon that isn't made for sniping. One of the main reasons for losing games is because someone in a tank will play it wrong, leaving mediums and lights to fight off enemy heavies all by themselves with some help from TDs and the friendly heavy tank(s) that are sniping hundreds of meters away from the actual fight.
Some tanks don't match their tank type. An example is the French heavies are classified as heavies but are basically medium tanks because of their speed and light armor.
16. Making the Best Purchases (with real money)
17. Choosing the Right Equipment
Combat Power 1 | Combat Power 2 | Vitality 1 | Vitality 2 | Specialization 1 | Specialization 2 | |
1 |
Gun Rammer |
Calibrated Shells |
Improved Modules | Defense System | Improved Optics | Camo Net |
2 | Enhanced Gun Laying Drive | Supercharge | Enhanced Armor | Improved Assembly | Improved Control | Engine Accel. |
3 | Vert. Stabilizer | Refined Gun | Enhanced Tracks | Toolbox | Consumable Deliv. Sys. | High-End Consumables |
READ THIS BY FIRST ROW (1-3) THEN ABBREVIATION OF THE CATEGORY (EX: Combat Power 1 is CP1)
1/CP1 Use this for basically every tank
1/CP2 Use this for tanks with absurdly low penetration. Also, I run this on TDs with high alphas, like the ISU where pen (for mainly HE) matters a lot. A few milliseconds won't make a big difference.
1/V1 Do you ram people often? Does your ammo rack get damaged often? I use this for heavy tanks I ram in as it makes everything more durable and reduces ram damage.
1/V2 Do you get ammo racked often? The main use of this is for tanks that get ammo racked often, such as most Soviet meds
1/S1 Use this for all tanks except for sniping tanks, such as most TDs
1/S2 Use the camo net for all sniping TDs. Never should you run this on a light, heavy, or med.
2/CP1 Is your aiming time slow? Then you might want to put this on
2/CP2 Is the shell velocity extremely slow? Then use this as it boosts shell speed. Penetration decrease doesn't matter as the maps are so small its a minimal boost.
2/V1 Only use this for tanks with armor. For lights, like the T49, and other lightly armored tanks, this boost won't do anything useful
2/V2 You should only use this for tanks with light armor. HP boost will increase survivability. Tanks with armor should rely on armor, not as much on HP as your HP should be more protected than lightly armored tanks
2/S1 Use this for tanks with REALLY slow turning speeds
2/S2 Use this for almost all tanks. This boosts almost all mobility stats making it far superior to 2/S1
3/CP1 Use this for almost every tank in the game
3/CP2 This isn't really as important unless you are in a sniping TD
3/V1 Tracks are useless unless you are a fast tank like a light. It improves track durability which is nice if you move fast as getting tracked while spotting means you die
3/V2 Use this for any tank that isn't as fast as a light tank. Heavies should definitely use this.
3/S1 Unless you run the speed boost or adrenaline or any other consumables with effects that last x amount of time, then use this
3/S2 Use this if you run adrenaline or the speed boost or any other consumables with effects that last x amount of time
18. Provisions
19. Getting Gud
Don't play tiers you aren't good at or haven't become decent at. It is as simple as that. If you are having a hard time in high tiers and losing often, go back to lower tiers. I mean that in a nice way, as in hone in your skills at low tiers. Once your skills have been improved upon and have had new ones develop, playing high tiers will be a breeze. Practicing on new players rather than veterans of the game will lead to fewer hate messages in-game and after the game. Also, believe it or not, actually join training rooms. Though, only join RvR (runners vs. rammers) and battling type rooms if you really want to learn. RvR rooms will teach you how to predict enemy movement and help you master driving. Battling type rooms, like 1v1s or [Insert clan] vs. you rooms, will teach you combat knowledge and you won't lose anything, but credits! Especially since good players host those battling rooms and you can learn more from fighting a good player than a decent one. Similar to PUBG and Fortnite, in order to get good at the game, in this case, it would be looting and staying alive, primarily honing aiming skills and basic fighting skills. For World of Tanks Blitz, throw yourself into a fight in a training room. Never do that in a public game since you will get obliterated, no matter skill level.
20. Angling
21. Going Hull Down
Tanks with lots of frontal turret armor should always try to go hull down. Going hull down is hiding a tank's hull and only the turret is exposed to an enemy. This is a useful skill to know and master. Usually, most tanks have frontal turret armor stronger than frontal hull armor. Hiding that weaker hull and only showing the strong turret is the most effective. Use dead tanks and working with ridge lines can help achieve going hull down.
The tier 7 American heavy tank, the T29 is absolutely amazing at going hull down due to its ridiculous amount of turret armor and gun depression. Use HE against tanks going hull down or try to flank them if the match allows it. Hull down tanks are an enemy to all and can perform 2 v 5s down an alleyway easy. Though, some tanks have huge cupolas (the commander's hatch), such as the Tiger P which makes going hull down less viable.
22. Sidescraping
23. Chat Enable/Disable
24. Map Pinging
25. Focus Fire on Enemies
26. Being a Useful Sacrifice
Clans are designed to have clan mates to help one another and all together progress in the game. So for that basic reason, a new player should always find a clan. Plus, there is such a thing as Clan Supply. Basically it's like Personal Supply in which it grants discounts for consumables and garage slots purchasable by credits and such things like that. Well, the catch is that in order to get the bonuses from the Clan Supply you need to be in a clan. So even if you aren't planning on staying with a certain clan it's best to stay with them anyway or find a more suitable clan for you ASAP. Because in the end at Clan Supply level 10 and Personal Supply level 10 the IS-5 can be purchased for gold for very cheap. And by not spending gold and saving up for it you can get a mildly OP tier 8 USSR heavy tank. Plus, veteran players look down upon players that aren't in a clan. In battles, I, as well as others, think of those on my team who aren't in clans worse than those who are in clans that I don't even know. Being in a clan is a win-win for all situations and helps out long term.
28. Camouflage
Learning what and how to use camouflage is one of the most important skills in the game. Shooting enemies 50 meters away and not being spotted (therefore not taking damage) can help in the long run in winning the battle. Basically there are two types of camouflage in the game: Tank and map camouflage. Always buy/use tank camouflage regardless of tank type. Think of two tanks driving in a line down a road. One has tank camouflage and the other doesn't. A spotting tank goes up and spots the tank without camouflage and is instantly killed by camping enemy tanks whilst the tank with camouflage is safe from being spotted. Even if it's +3% camouflage and the tank being used is a front line brawling tank, camouflage is important. The other type of camouflage is the bushes already placed on maps. Bushes conceal a tank from enemies. Basically, if all of your tank's front is hidden by a bush (excluding the gun) you are most likely correctly hidden (If spotting checkpoints aren't hidden by the bush you aren't correctly hidden. Refer to the video attached to 4. to see how to correctly use a bush). But if you fire your bush camouflage is now rendered useless and now your spotted. Reversing your tank so that the bush isn't see-through anymore and then firing will keep your tank hidden by the enemy. For a more in-depth way on how to remain hidden utilizing bushes please refer to the video attached to 4. (The third line - has the timestamp on how to correctly hide in a bush) on how to correctly hide your tank to not be spotted by the enemy.
29. Not All Tanks Should be Played According to Their Tank Type
Each tank in the game has its own tank-type whether it be medium, heavy, etc. Well, some of those tanks have misleading tank types. Some tank types shouldn't be played as the tank types given. An example would be the AMX 40. The game classifies it as a medium tank. Medium tanks are supposed to flank, be somewhat of brawlers, and be versatile tanks. Well, the AMX 40 shouldn't play like a medium tank, it should play like a heavy tank. It's armor and pre-angled armored plates make it an amazing heavy tank. Another example would be the AMX 50 B. It's classified as a heavy tank, but it shouldn't be played like one. Comparing the Maus to the AMX 50 B there are major contrasts. They both are heavies so both should go front line and bounce enemy shots and take the beating from the enemy tanks? No, not at all. The AMX 50 B has weak armor and can be penetrated by almost any tier 9 or tier 10 tank. That very small majority of tanks that can't penetrate it shouldn't be the reason to play the AMX 50 B like a heavy tank, such as a Maus. Some tanks with their tank types shouldn't be played how their tank type labels them.
30. Good/Bad Uses for Free Experience
Free experience is that small portion of experience granted after each battle that slowly adds up into a suitable amount that can be used for every tank in the game. It can "free exp" modules or tanks to unlock on the tech tree them for any vehicle in the game. Well, don't free exp tanks to unlock them. It's a waste of it and in the long run, it won't benefit you. Instead, the free experience should only be used to unlock modules for tanks. The reasoning behind this is that once you buy a tank it will be completely stock with a bad crew and no upgraded tank modules. It will be easier to play with a bad crew and fully upgraded modules than with everything stock. For example, looking at the T-54. If you decide to unlock the T-54 from the T-44 with free experience then you will have a hard time battles. First, the gun the stock T-54 uses is a gun with only 175mm of pen. That's absolutely horrendous for tier 9 tank standards. That gun cannot penetrate any tank in tier 9 except for a few. And if it becomes low tier in a tier 10 game you basically broke your team's heart because all you are at that point is dead meat. The better way to handle things is to grind to the T-54 manually and then use the free experience to unlock better modules (preferably the gun and turret) so you have a better time starting out in tier 9. So in the end, free experience modules and don't free exp tanks.
31. Regulating Use of in Battle Chat
Using chat to communicate with team members or to greet a friend whether an ally or an enemy is fun and helpful. However, sometimes prolonged use of chat can be a downfall. Recently I personally experience a player who could've won the battle for our team. Instead of driving towards the last teammate alive who was being fought they decided to type in chat and say sorry for whatever reason. Well, them being incapacitated allowed an enemy WT to come from behind and kill them easily. In those situations, it's best to lay off chat. Even though the pros of a chat outweigh the cons, there are still cons to think about. And one of those cons is being incapacitated by using chat and not focusing on the situation. So in the end, manage when you use chat as using it in the wrong times could lead to a missed shot or possibly lose the game because one bad decision to open the chat.
32. Don't Giveaway Your Account
A very off-topic post in this, but it's a very real problem for newer players. If life has in store a surprise that renders you unable to play Blitz for the current time or whether you lose interest in the game. Never give your account away. Because all that hard work put into your account lost by a single act of giving it away. Possibly in a few months or weeks, maybe even in a year, the thought of WoTB might still linger and you might decide to get the game back. Well, you're in bad luck because your account was given away by yourself for a quick buck or because of the inability to play Blitz. In the end, save your account. You won't regret it and after a while, you might start to play Blitz again and you may not notice it at first, but you'll be glad you didn't give away your account.
33. Don't Tunnel Specific Players
Indeed, some players are more of a threat than others on the enemy team. That still doesn't necessarily mean that you shouldn't fully tunnel them (only focus on them). Players from good clans like to have fun like all of us, though, it isn't fun for them to be consistently YOLOed upon or only be shot at by the enemy team. Later on, you'll know who to shoot and when to shoot, but for now. Focus on the entire battle, not a specific player. In the long run, learning these skills now and becoming a better player now is better than learning later on.
34. How to Gain Gameplay Experience
This is different than the actual experience you gain from playing battles. This is the experience of the number of battles you have played and your skillset in the game. This is more of a general tip and not a specific one like the ones previous. The way to improve your experience is (not in any specific order):
1. Watching YouTubers on Blitz
2. Throwing yourself into the thick of a battle (Note: Only do this in TRAINING ROOMS. Literally throw yourself in a fight and try to survive. This is the best way in any game to get good. It's a grind, it will be hard, but it's good work).
3. Develop logical thinking skills. I developed mine when in 8th grade I thought of the future and was very real with myself about the future to come. This is very selective to each person. Logical thinking skills are extremely important in Blitz. This involves actually thinking of everything you do in Blitz. A good player can make a game-changing decision in a second; learning players may be about a few seconds and that's fine.
4. Enjoy the game. You can never get good at something without enjoying it.
35. Pay Attention to Game News
To be good at something you'll need to know everything that happens in the game. Whenever an update comes, look at the changelog. It doesn't hurt to know what tanks get more powerful or got reduced in strength. Knowing which tanks are more potent and which are less is important knowledge that gives you a 1 up on players that skim the changelogs. Players invested in a game and enjoying it will want to know what happens to their favorite or one of their favorite games. It doesn't hurt to know and as meme society would say, "knowledge is power," which undoubtedly is.
36. Engage with the Community
Talking with people of this game and being an active member actively makes you become more interested in Blitz. That interest fuels you to play better and want to become better. Talking with people and discussing bad updates, good updates, cool tanks, etc also increases your knowledge of the game and knowledge is power in real life and even on video games!
37. How to CORRECTLY Grind Tank Lines
You gain XP through anything you do in battle. To maximize XP gained and therefore grind your tank then activate XP boosters, run a premium certificate, and watch the videos at the end of a battle that boosts credits and XP gained. A fast way to grind your tanks in modes that don't affect stats. Play your tanks in realistic mode, mad games, uprising, etc. This is because you can afford to be more careless and play more casually. Also because you'll get more damage in these modes and therefore gain more XP.
38. How Not to Be Blind (Seeing Enemies)
Lower all of your graphics to the lowest. Primarily, lower fog quality to the lowest it can go. This, in turn, makes it extremely easy to see enemies. You can see enemies easily in realistic mode and can see weak points of enemy tanks that are far away. Overall lowering graphics makes it easier to see enemies and can keep your FPS up to a consistent 30 or 60 FPS (depending on your preference). Overall, just a good thing to at least try. It builds good practice and you can always revert graphics back to what you prefer.
39. How to Win (Most Games)
Just follow the team. If the correct flank to go is left and you say that in chat but the team goes right anyway then you should go right. There's no point in going left by yourself as you will lose. This works ESPECIALLY well in slow tanks (like heavies) where you rely on the team to survive. Even if no enemies go down your lone flank, that means its a 6v7 and number-wise your team will lose. If you followed the team it would a 7v7 which is a better chance at winning.
Try to survive. If you survive then you do more damage and increase your chances of winning. However, this does NOT mean you should camp. There is a fine balance between surviving and camping and once you find that balance you'll excel in your games.
40. How to Play Pike Nosed Heavies (Most SU Heavies)
Pike nosed heavies are tanks with those 3D triangle hull things, such as the IS-3, IS-7, 252U, etc (basically MOST Soviet heavy tanks save the T-22 Medium). The armor is already angled so you should just point your hull straight at the enemy. By angling, you flatten out a part of the pike nose making it easier to pen. The lower plate is the biggest problem so always try to cover it up. I try to cover it up by using small gravel mounds or dead tank carcasses. Doing this drastically increases survivability.
41. How to Raise WN8
WN8 is your overall skill rating in readable numbers. WN8 is everything in your account. It's encompassing your WR, average damage, survival rate, K/D ratio, etc. There is a whole chart on colors based on numbers, but you should aim for 2500+ aka purple. BlitzStars displays your player WN8 for your account and tank. To raise your overall account WN8, just survive in battle. If you survive, you do more damage, spot more, cap more, increase the chances of winning, etc. However, surviving DOESN'T EQUAL camping. Once you find the right balance between camping and surviving, your WN8 and skills will increase. By surviving more you are teaching yourself how to live longer whether it be improving angling skills, killing skills, how to stay unspotted, how to deal damage without taking any in return; the list goes on. Just SURVIVE. This applies to anyone, regardless if they want to raise WN8.
42. How to Win Supremacy Battles
This first paragraph general information on this gamemode. Supremacy is dictated by different control points on the map. This could be cap points A, B, C, and sometimes D. You can win by being the first team to reach 1000 points or killing the entire enemy team. A tank death subtracts 30 points from the host team and adds 30 points to the enemy team. An enemy tank capturing a cap point will stop giving points to team that originally owned the capture point.
To win all you have to do is have more capture points than the enemy and just defend. Supremacy has capture points and you should use these capture points to win. If you have more points and caps than the enemy you can defend and let them YOLO your team in an effort to stop cap. All you need is to have more cap control than the enemy. There is no need to go hunting for kills when you have the cap advantage. Don't die unnecessarily because you will make your team lose points.
If you have lower points/caps than the enemy then you have to make a push. If the enemy team is about to win on points then you have to kill enemies to gain 30 points while they lose 30 points. Think smart and perhaps capture and objective before you contest the enemies.
Supremacy is currently the only tournament mode so learning supremacy is useful if you want to play competitively.
43. How to Find and Redeem Codes
Codes are pretty cool and in Blitz they usually just give boosters or free experience but free stuff is free stuff. To find codes then I'd highly recommend monitoring the Blitz Discord or Forums. The Subreddit is pretty quick on unveiling codes. To find the source of the codes, however, I believe they are first posted by the WoTB Instagram account. Most Blitz codes have a redeem limit meaning after a certain amount of uses then it expires so you have to be quick on it.
To redeem a code then just Google "World of Tanks" or go to any other WG website and log in. At the top right there is a drop down menu and there is an option to activate a Wargaming code. Click that and redeem the code.
