AMX 12t should I free xp?

Well, it depends what about the 12t you don't like.
That said, the 12t is basically a rough cutout of what you should expect from the French lights.
Paper thin armor, poor gun depression/elevation angles, 65km/h speed limit, and autoloaders
The tanks further in the branch will improve on the speed and the depression/elevation (slightly), but the general playstyle of the flanker/spotter/clipper stays. If you fundamentally despise the playstyle of the 12t, you should grind a different line
336 tanks in the garage!

^ this.
amx 13 75 is basically the same and it fights against tier 8, don't waste your free xp, if you don't like the 12t then you'll most likely dislike the 1375 as well.

if u can’t make it work at tier 6, tier 7 will be worst.
the entire line after plays very similar, imo.
the only difference in amx12 is that you should never stop running. Picking up speed takes too long.
also, free xp is generally put to best use to open the modules of tier 9 tanks.
Not to skip the learning curve.
Good luck.

Why would you free XP past this beauty?
This tank feels like it's not very good when I'm driving it and yet the results are consistently there.

This is a very powerful tank from my experience. Although it takes some time to get use to, it's worth it. My stats are just blue mostly because the connection where I started playing it was absolutely crap.

I agree that it is powerful. I play all tanks aggressively, including this one, so I am often in the thick of the battle from the very beginning. But, there are times that exercising patience and hanging back a bit can really pay off with this tank. The 480 clip potential combined with its speed allows you to change the course of a battle if you strike at the right moment. Seeing a powerful tank that is below 500 hitpoints might be a great chance to charge in and unload a full clip into them.
Or if you see a pitched battle with 2-3 1-shot reds, you can rush in to clear those guns. I had a battle on Mayan Ruins in the 12 t the other day, where I hadn't been able to get much going and had taken some big hits so I pulled back to cover. There was a big pitched battle going on the A side and 3 reds were well positioned but all below 160 hp. I decided to make my move and was able to clear all three in one clip. I died for my efforts, but that rush broke red's back and turned a close battle into a rout in our favor. I would not have been able to do that in any other tier 6 tank. The MT 25's alpha isn't high enough, so I would have been able to clear 2 reds at best, and the other fast tier 6 tanks have reloads that are too long and I would have been lucky to clear a single tank, maybe 2.

I felt the exact same way about the regular Cromwell and Centurion I.
The Cromwell (B in my case) has always felt like a great tank to me. It is the tank I always fall back on when I hit a losing streak.

That's the thing. I read all the hype about the Cromwell B and foolishly thought the regular Cromwell would be functionally the same thing.
Eventually I bought the Cromwell B and it's everything it's cracked up to be.
