the m4 49 is definitly not op with its he pennable side armor and turret weakspots/ lower plate. its more of a lowe that trades some armor effectivness for mobility. not to say its not a fantastic heavy, which it is.

For me, it's a lot less predictable than the IS3. I've played both quite a bit. In the IS3, I'll run about 60% and that'll fluctuate between periods of 56-63%.

 

In the IS5, it's maddening at times. You'll have games where it'll feel invincible. Bouncing stuff that should never bounce, dealing out 400+ shots to anyone in your path. Then the next game, you won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn, and if you do, bounce. I had a WR in it around 60% just before the last event. Figured I'd play it to grind the xp needed. For that week, I was in the 20's. Couldn't buy a good game.

I might also want to buy one too, but I've realised A sort of "food chain relationship" between the IS and other tanks

 

High pen heavies (T34, AMX 49, LOWE)>IS spam>other heavies

Buy the IS-5? Of course. It's a great bargain for the price. Makes decent credits.The gun is very troll and works best at closer ranges. But a skilled player can put it in situations to make it very hard to pen. I have had a lot of fun running the IS-5.

IS5?  OP?  What?  I like mine but its not OP by any stretch.  Still has terrible gun depression and typical Russian accuracy.

I'm not a fan of it.  In hindsight I wish I hadn't bought it.  The gun struggles to hit the broadside of a barn...from the inside.

The IS-5 gun's accuracy is like throwing rocks when its a distance shot. It makes the Defender, or IS-6's gun seem accurate in comparison, lol! Worst gun handling of any Russian gun and that's saying a lot. You can't snap shot with it at all, you have to let the bloom totally settle down. I have learned to deal with it, as I ran the KV-3 120mm when I learned Russian heavies. The IS-5 gun still trolls me some games, but I still like it a lot in most games.

I absolutely suck in mine. I don’t really believe the tank is bad, I think it’s really just not right for my play style.  I’m not great at face to face brawling, and I get the impression that’s what this tank is all about.  The slow reload bores me to death, and the lack of gun depression is depressing.  I go hull down and get my turret penned frequently enough to put that myth to lie.  Plenty of guys do great in it, so good luck to you.

the lower plate is very very small and the cupola weakspot is also very hard to hit

I have 17 tier 8 tanks and my WR is highest in IS5.  Granted I didn't get it until I was well practiced at Tier 8, but still.  And earns credits better than most.  Total no brainer to buy now that credits are important again.

T-34-2 and IS-5 are my highest WR tier 8's
