Whoo, more fantasy tanks. This time on the menu:

The Hafen from Valkyria Chronicles. Featured in the game as a more futuristic and steampunky version of the M4 Sherman. In the game Valkyria Chronicles 4, the Hafen is a modified version of the Minute tank, which is essentially a larger M4 Sherman (6cm longer, 1.43m wider, and 31cm taller), it maintains a similar weight (31 metric tons vs. 30.1 metric tons) and a similar mobility profile with the same engine power.

A picture of the Hafen is here:

In World of Tanks Blitz, the Hafen is equipped with the 82mm M35E4 gun. It features good mobility, DPM, and gun handling, and significantly upgraded armor over a standard M4 Sherman. It is a Tier VII Medium Tank of the Hybrid Nation tree.

The stats for the gun are as follows:

Sucks I'm broke, otherwise I'd get one myself. Overall it seems like a really effective vehicle, and short of the distinctively cartoon styled turret, it could pass for an M4 Sherman at Tier VII. Not to mention the gun is really nice.

Tier 7 medium? With a base penetration of 145? Uh- uh. Have fun fighting against IS-X's whose hitskins resemble those of a tomato.

The pen is meh so you’ll make very few credits by having to go to APCR too often.

Otherwise?  Yes, please. I’ll take one right now please. No need to wrap it. I’ll eat it here.

The point of the game is to win.  The purpose of the game is to have fun.  They are not mutually exclusive.

Considering the fantastic mobility for what's essentially an uptiered Sherman (Bigger engine, better ground resistance, and higher traverse), it'll have no problem flanking around heavies and destroying rear armor. This tank pretty much emphasizes the Sherman's playstyle minus abusing the turret.

Well calibrated shells should get you 155 ap pen and 205 apcr so not too bad, least it's got a high enough rate of fire anyway.

Still may get it.

What do you mean about the turret? Does it not hold up well? Hmm... that doesn't bode well.

No, it's just the fact the turret looks like the turret on the Edelweiss. With the armor it actually has (120/120/75) this thing would be a monster hull down, as the sides are sloped waaaaaaaaay back and it has 7 degrees of gun depression.

pen is in line with quite a few very good tier 7 mediums.  Comet, Rudy, T-43.  145 is perfectly fine for a medium at that tier.

Also appears to have some spaced armor - and a large mantlet.

My guess is the effective armor will be over 200

Oh easily. HEAT spammers are gonna have a hard time doing anything to your turret, and I think even a few heavies will struggle to damage you hull down.

My point exactly; and considering it has some pretty good DPM and gun handling (for a wonky gun like this) it should work great against other mediums, and have no problems with heavies with the superior mobility.

For anyone wondering how this machine stacks up against other Tier VII premium mediums:

Main advantages:

  • Good armor and mobility combination, making it the same as an IS-X in medium tank form
  • View range is tied with the Edelweiss.

Disadvantages:

  • Gun handling is sub par, also tied with the Edelweiss. The penetration and alpha are also somewhat lack luster.
  • Lowest gun depression (but arguably best turret)
  • Lack luster overall gun stats.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Compared to Valkyria Chronicles games, the Hafen tank receives a larger cannon. The Hafen in VC4 has a 75mm squeeze bore cannon, which reduces the shell diameter to 36mm. We're already receiving a more powerful and faster firing cannon than WG could have added.
  • The armor panels on the sides were intended in the game to hide the pathetically weak ammunition racks. Apparently in VC4, "wet" ammunition rack technology hasn't been developed. In game, these panels will act as spaced armor, meaning extra protection from HEAT ammunition.
  • The tank also goes 5km/h faster than it should, to tie it with more mobile mediums at the tier.

Overall, this tank is exactly an uptiered M4 Sherman with Jumbo's armor and a resoundingly British gun. If we wanted to get into a contest of how much damage it should be doing, it realistically should be doing 185 damage per shot rather than 190, so I'm not complaining on that front either.

I like the Edelweiss so I will probably end up with this one too. With the gun handling stats being almost identical I am sure this tank will wiff shots just like the Edelweiss does.

This tank won't officially be released until after the date of September 25, 2018, the official launch date of Valkyria Chronicles 4.

Pretty sure everyone does; so far this is the most realistic looking fantasy category tank to be released to the game, and it has the stats to back up its theoretical popularity. The only drawback is really the gun compared to other vehicles in the class, as I mentioned. It'll still easily rip apart other mediums due to the far superior armor however.

I know the question everyone has about the Hafen's armor however. How does it stack up against the broken Lupus?

The answer: Really frigging well.
